Psychedelics are a category of hallucinogens that literally cause an aspect of the mind to manifest that would otherwise be hidden, from the Latin terms
(psyche) mind, soul and
(delos) manifest, visible. They cause certain mental 'filters' to be temporarily switched off, allowing the influenced to experience many emotions, feeling, and ideas coming in from the outside world that would otherwise be blocked out. A common term used to describe psychedelics is
mind expanding.
Most typical psychedelics act on the 5-HT (serotonin) receptors, such as
LSD,
magic mushrooms, and
mescaline.
