Certain Species of Morning Glories

Swim has a few morning glory plants growing in his yard. They're purple/blue in color and they're a vine (kind of). Swim was just wondering if there are certain morning glory species that don't have LSA in them and instead contain harmful chemicals. SWIM can't give the species name because they were growing at the house before he moved in.

Any help or tips would be appreciated!

Re: Certain Species of Morning Glories

some "morning glories" do have some toxic stuff in them. always good to get them identified before hand.

a good clear picture of the entire plant, the leaves on the stem, the flower (side/top/inside), seed photos, "fruit" photos, also taking notes on things such as size of certain parts. flower, leaves, style, how many filaments etc will all help out a lot. if your able, a photo of the pollen is useful in mg identification, although you will probably need a researcher in that field to help you out with ID.

honestly, "blue flowers and heart shape leaves" are not really enough to ID morning glories, which is what many people tend to describe them as

Re: Certain Species of Morning Glories

all morning glory species contain LSA and I'm not sure but I don't think any of them are "poisonous". Morning glory seeds contain toxic oils that can cause terrible nausea, but not much more than that. This one swiy is talking looks like ipomoea violacea btw.

Re: Certain Species of Morning Glories

toxic and poisonous are pretty similar, and there are toxic species

also the majority have not been tested, and there have been many found to be ergoline negative. I have a list on my site of all the ergoline positive species, but not sure the rules on links. Toxic is like harmful but not lethal, while poisonous is something that actually will kill swiy and should not be tried at all. But sorry, didn't know not all morning glories contain LSA, are there any that are truly poisonous?

Re: Certain Species of Morning Glories

well, i am not sure abotu deadly. but in a negative effect, causes much discomfort kind of way of toxid/poisonous one example would be I. carnea which many places consider "poisonous". its a little grey on whether it contains ergolines or not.some say yay, some say nay. probably one of thos ecases where teh fungus only grows on individualplants and not on others liek Turbina adn I. tricolor. but im not sure on that.

can you elaborate? what species are you referring to as morning glories? some people only call a few species morning glory, in which case you may be right, but others call then entire Convolvulaceae family the morning glories, in which case there are MANY non active species and some species that will bring you a lot of trouble.

Re: Certain Species of Morning Glories

Those are specific cultivars, not species. They are common to find in places that sell seeds and will have those names on the package. Remember to plant them and wait for them to produce seeds that won't have methylmercury on them, it's a common preservative used on seeds, and it's very bad for you.
