A thought occurred to Mal in his rehab prep meeting.
So this popped into Mal's head when he was sitting with the group in his rehab prep meeting on Wednesday.
To put a positive spin on it - addicts could be described as a very dedicated group of people.
I mean all the planning and scheming, the researching and obsessing, the energy that goes into searching for, obtaining and using their DoC, the effort and social skills required to fool other people into not thinking there's a problem - if an addict could only direct all of those qualities towards a positive goal or purpose, just imagine the good they could do for themselves and the people they care about!
Take Mal, for instance. His obsession has caused him to spend a large amount of his time with books and the internet studying the scientific aspect of drug use and addiction - it's resulted in him having a good amount of knowledge on the pharmacology and chemistry of various drugs - both psychoactive drugs and regular medicines. He's also spent some time learning about certain parts of psychology and psychiatry so that he could have a better understanding of both himself and the things he's obsessed with.
As Mal is a science student, he imagines that once he's beaten his addiction, if he can dedicate all of the qualities mentioned above to his studies, he will probably succeed in becoming a leading scientist in the field he ends up specialising in (assuming he does indeed beat the addiction and continue his studies without any more problems).
This gives me a lot of hope for Mal's future. Just wanted to share it with everyone in R&A - so that we can all realise that we all have a lot to live for afterwards if we achieve the potential we know we have.
