Asthma and Nitrous?

SWIM has asthma, god knows if it is classified as moderate or bad but smoking can set it off. Now he has read that nitrous should be avoided in people with asthma, but he was also read the same thing about smoking, and opiates, which he is OK with.

He is wondering if any asthmatics (who have to use their reliever pump every day) has had experiences on it? He just doesn't want to spend the money on it if he can use it properly. Although he cant see it being a problem he though should ask.

If and when he does try it he will post his findings here.

Re: Asthma and Nitrous?

SWIM imagines that tiny amounts of the machining oil that sometimes coat the insides of the whippets could set off an asthma attack.

SWIY can make a fairly effective filter by shoving a few cotton balls into the exit spout of a dispenser.

SWIM has heard of people having bad asthma attacks from nitrous but his dentist told him that it is quite rare for it to happen to anyone without severe asthma. SWIM imagines that people could have asthma attacks from breathing in and out the balloon too fast, or hyperventilating to get maximum use from the nitrous.

Re: Asthma and Nitrous?

SWIM has a bad enough case of asthma in that he uses Advair 250 twice a day, along with the salbutamol inhalers whenever needed. He told me he spent a good solid hour inhaling nitrous from several fully inflated 20" balloons, "power hooting" as he likes to call it (inhaling and exhaling 5-6 times, sometimes to the point of unconsciousness). He reported no problems in breathing, but dared to say that it actually acted as a sort of broncho-dilator.

This stuff affects everyone differently though, so SWIY should still take precautions.
