Hello
Before i start SWIM has picked many times before and can is a safe picker. Today SWIM went mountain biking in the pishing rain and found a meadow field full of cow shit, perfect conditions for liberty caps, however SWIM did not find any - the meadow was pretty water logged from the past two days rain. Is it therefore required that SWIM return to the meadow on the next nice day? I saw one the other day. The meadow is 100 ft above sea level (asl) - should SWIM search at higher altitudes. Also swim keeps on hearing about north and south facing fieds - whats the reasoning? regards |

Re: Liberty Caps in the Emerald Isle - Advice needed
It's probably still too early for them here, I'd say give it another few weeks and they should start appearing. Generally the day after a light/moderate rain shower is what is recommended but if SWIY just scouts the fields on a regular basis he should find them.

Re: Liberty Caps in the Emerald Isle - Advice needed
Well maybe but I've never seen liberty caps this early, not in the southeast anyway.

Re: Liberty Caps in the Emerald Isle - Advice needed
SWIY, on the northern ireland fungus group website site, in their fungus database, NI atlas of fungus, they show this for habitat and month of sightings...
'Habitat (where recorded) & number of records: Acid grassland: semi-improved (11) Neutral grassland: semi-improved (4) Acid grassland: unimproved (3) Festuca ovina-Agrostis capillaris-Galium saxatile grassland (3) Mire: blanket bog (3) Acid grassland (2) Grassland: calcareous, semi-improved, upland (2) Improved grassland (2) Woodland (2) Woodland: coniferous (2) Woodland: coniferous, plantation (2) Woodland: mixed (2) Bog (1) Calcareous grassland: unimproved (1) Cultivated/disturbed land: amenity grassland (1) Grassland: acidic, semi-improved, upland (1) Grassland: acidic, upland (1) Nardus stricta-Galium saxatile grassland (1) Parkland and scattered trees: mixed (1) Scrub (1) Woodland: broadleaved, semi-natural (1) Woodland: mixed, semi-natural (1) Substrate (where recorded) & number of records: Dung (1) Soil (1) Soil Grassy (1) Soil Mossy (1) Tree (1) Months recorded in & number of records: January (1) July (1) August (1) September (12) October (41) November (34)' so maybe its better for SWIY to leave the picking to next month or October... |

Re: Liberty Caps in the Emerald Isle - Advice needed
I'd just like to point out to whomever left the rep stating that the OP self-incriminated that they are simply incorrect. If they are referring to the line "I saw one the other day" that is not incrimination, Psilocybe semilanceata grow wild and it is certainly not a crime to look at them. Nowhere did he state that he would pick or ingest said mushrooms thus no self-incrimination has taken place.
I often see this, I really think people need to learn what constitutes self-incrimination. Conversely I often see people use "SWIM" when there is no need to. |
