Abstinence - IN which country is it the hardest to find drugs?

I am wondering in which countries it is real hard to find drugs. Especially cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis.
Is it a viable plan to go somewhere where its extremely difficult to find drugs for say 3-4 weeks in order to get trough withdrawals?

I would really appreciate feedback on this.

Turtle would say swiy can find drugs of some sort everywhere.
Some of the regions that first popped to mind would be very hard for turtle to find his drugs of choice, but they are major producers or transport points for opium/heroin or cocaine. Worth noting though that some may have extremely harsh penalties for pocession of such substances- especially for a foreigner.
Marijuana can be found just about everywhere on earth.
And pretty much every region has some native plants that can be used as drugs.

It may be possible to escape certain types of drugs, but turtle would be amazed if it were possible to escape all.

Had a friend clean up in Dubai. Punishment is real strict for possession.


My friend who did this had family who lived in Dubai. She did well moved back to the states but not from where she was originally from. When she returned to the city where she used most of her drugs, she did get back on them, briefly and sporadically. Though she now seems unable to use her original drug of choice, cocaine for more than a night or two. She gets depressed and becomes very unhappy. She drinks more now but its not a problem for her.

Had another friend clean up in Lebanon If I recall correctly. She seems to be doing alright now but when she got back she was over using fentanyl and any opiate/opioid she could get a hold of. She periodically uses now and it always interferes with her life. Not nearly as much though. She also frequents the Uk and Egypt, which is always good for her in swims opinion, She comes back with a very clear mind.

There is plenty of cocaine, ecstasy, lsd, hashish, opium, heroin, and everything else to be had in Lebanon. Alot of it is even manufactured there these days. Not a good choice.

The U.A.E. is perhaps better, but of course you can still find some things there if you know where to look. On the other hand, their legislation is extremely punitive and unforgiving and thus is risky if the person may try to go out looking for something in desperation and end up doing something stupid.

Interesting... Saudi Arabia has very high rates of methamphetamine use. Would think that it would be easier to get a hold of than cocaine there. Also depends on where you would go. Still, chances of getting a visa without going there for a job are very very low.



I don't think the issue is finding a place where it is impossible to find drugs, as this isn't likely to exist. You just need a place where cultural or linguistic barriers preclude the person from easily gaining access to his/her preferred psychoactives. The Middle East is advantageous in that drug dealing isn't very open / public (as opposed to much of Europe where asking around on the street or even just walking around certain areas will do the trick), but laws can be very strict in some countries (level of enforcement varies greatly).


An Inn or small hotel out in the boondocks somewhere in the US or Europe may be a better idea than urban areas in most any country, regardless of how hard drugs are to find there. Sitting around cows with the nearest drug dealers a hundred miles away would make it easier to dry out perhaps. Also being away from hectic urban environment and negative peer pressures & influences (club scene, fellow drug users, whatever) and instead in a more calming and peaceful environment might help.

This place helped swim get of yaba but coke, hash/weed, ecstasy and heroine can be found... But if someone is serious wanting to stop then this small island can help if he doesn't go looking for them !!! If he does look for them then drugs can be found.

abolutely agree with the above on Lebanon, not a good choice. poly-drug use is also quite on the rise in the middle-east and Gulf countries atm, due to favourable financial and social conditions.

one place which might be recommendable is Japan.
Though substance use is certainly present, especially amphetamine and methamphetamine due to North-Korea's proximity (there's a major scandal at the moment with a pop-star on the run for minute amounts of meth found in her flat and her husband's undies, look up Sakai Noriko), and there is a sort of sub-culture boom, with books about drugs coming out, drug use in Japan is still surprisingly low-key, secretive.

it is totally socially unacceptable, and unless one has connections in the media / nightlife / expat / criminal culture (ie what most usual tourists won't have), and especially if one avoids Tokyo, quite hard to find.
the R.C. / mushroom selling stands of Shibuya are a thing of the past, and if one avoids alternative nightlife in major towns ( the dirtiest being Tokyo and Osaka), it should be fine.

Most people will have no drug experience or knowledge, and only vaguely heard of someone having tried cannabis in university, though not quite sure if it was cannabis or speed... isolation, due to the former post-war deal between the yakuza and the governement to only allow amphetamine and derivatives (shabu) in the country have isolated the alternative culture (to the point that psychedelic bands of the 1960's played with eyemasks to simulate altered perceptions).
this has changed of course, drugs are available, but very well hidden compared to other asian countries.

high penalties, language barrier and the isolation of foreigners in Japan also play in one's favour.
if one doesn't speak Japanese, avoids hitting the (alternative) night spots, especially Tokyo, Japan is surprisingly "clean" and naïve. there really won't be any temptations.

there is one major exception though, as Japanese culture is a major drinking culture.
alcohol, and getting drunk, is a heavy part of (male) social life, though this applies less to foreigners visiting Japan or cleaning up there.

Cocaine is virtually impossible to get in NZ and good ecstasy is hard to find. Lots of marijuana though. Also all drugs (with the exception of marijuana) are far more expensive in NZ so this could work in your friends favour. There is an island at the bottom of NZ called Stewart Island and I doubt there are any drugs there except for marijuana.

Good suggestion with Japan Benga. The cultural and language barriers to accessing the drug scene are very high there, which would be beneficial. From what I've heard, prices are also through the roof, limiting use even if you can find stuff there.

Last year's WHO drug use survey would appear to counter your claim, but I don't know much about the situation on the ground there so I can't really comment on the actual cocaine availability situation there.

The island (remote or not) isn't a bad idea though. Cut off from normal scenes, it could work to prevent access to drugs. Plus NZ is beautiful and has ample opportunities for outdoor activities to keep your mind off drug use!

In all her Years (6.5) my Cat reported only three Times a Contact with Drugs.
And even there is a possibility to buy something she get shocked,

I think the important thing here is whether or not the person wants to get away from using drugs. If they do pretty much anyplace will do as long as the person is not going to be offered drugs on the sidewalk or be tempted to much(over the counter drugs, drugs in the house they are staying at ect). I have had friends clean up in San Fransisco under the watchful eye of family and friends...they did fine..if the individual does not want to clean up.. good luck, they will spend enormous amounts of time trying to get drugs.

Its possible to get any drug in say Auckland, Wellington in NZ but once you head out into the boondocks its pretty much cannabis only. Stewart Island is mint, the rangers out there grow weed up in the back country. However, it is bush weed so not skunk therefore pretty mild.

Stewart Island has mushies in autumn, would be a major undertaking tho without local help.

Would reccommend the West Coast, South Island as the locals are an insular lot. Still heaps of weed though. Sorry no escape from that in NZ.(a lot of bush on the coast tho, not indoors)

There are some pretty cool yoga retreats etc in Golden Bay that focus on meditation in beautiful locations..probably the best place to go in NZ to chillax.

If you want a cut off, not a holiday, try a spell in a smaller Korean town. They are unlikely to sell any drugs to Westerners, and its very frowned upon and so forth. Also the Korean police if they do get you are a detterrent which works..the old traditional guys are not a fan of westerners etc.

Golden Bay NZ would be a nice(very) location for recovery. Korea would be difficult to get drugs except in the large cities. Japan also has the scary anti drug thing going on so either/or.

Would agree with poster above in that if you want to quit, anywhere will work. Have personally spent a few weeks "quitting" in the South Island, going thru nasty withdrawals in backpackers and it was not fun..could have done it easier in my own home. Then gone on a primo trip down South and had fun.

Korea stopped me smoking pot etc though, theres just none around out of Seoul.

SWIM thinks he should point out, when The Happy Mondays (A UK dance band) went to Barbados to get over heroin withdrawals and record an album, they came back with a big crack cocaine addiction.

I'm sure in most places there is some form of drug available, even if it is alcohol, tobacco or a plant which grows naturally in that area. I think you could get 'high' in any area, should you be determined enough. But the best places to go are probably areas which have little influence from western culture, and also speak a language you don't know.

I don't think sending an addict to a place where the laws are harsh is a good idea, though a deterrent for most people to use, this would not deter an addict, only get them in a lot of shite.

Yep you won't get shot in NZ unless you play with guns. Yes my kitten would agree that it is intent really, there must be a nice mellow place in the Dutch countryside?

Also with say, Korea or Japan it is definitely possible to score drugs in the countryside say, or at least asking all the young characters for a hookup, which will then get you into a definitive cold turkey in an asian jail. So just increasing the penalties won't stop the search for drugs, it will just make the results a lot riskier.

If SWIY rocks up to Stewart Island(in the warmer months!!) its unlikely SWIY will find any drugs except cannabis, and that will be hard to find.

If someone needs a "no escape" situation there must be a secure rehab in Holland, prison in singapore is a bit too secure and could be a final withdrawal. Best of luck to whoever needs it.

the people portrayed seemed pretty wild and party-friendly, and i wouldn't be surprised some stuff circulates at McMurdo station, one of the main gateways to the continent.

Lock someone in a room for a year, just provide sustenance, entertainment and exercise. Let em out in a year and Sparkles guarantees they will be drug free. She also knows without dealing with the problem that caused the addiction they will be back in that damn room fairly quickly...getting clean all over again.
Sparkles never struggles to get drugs wherever she goes, unfortunately she doesn't have to look for them, she goes to a doc. When Sparkles first began her drug career (feels like it) heroin wasn't as freely available as it is today, she got her heroin from doctors. Now she's older it's easier to blag em, she knows just what illness/symptom to have, side effects and interactions, what drugs are given (or not) for secondary illnesses. Illnesses that cannot be confirmed as such.
So Sparkles would say, if there's a doc, she can get drugs. She's clean now, so doesn't try, but she has found it's got easier as she's got older, something few people consider. Age can work against you when you wanna stay clean.
