Modifying a soldering iron?

So, SWIM's shower curtain was going to smoke a at a house that everybody in the whole town smokes at. On the way to the room where he was going to smoke, SWIM's shower curtain saw people lighting a bong with appeared to be a soldering iron. SWIM's shower curtain noted this for future refrence but forgot to ask about it. How do shower curtains use soldering irons to light bongs? Is it an actual soldering iron? If so, can my shower curtain modify one to use it? He can't afford to buy one designed for it (if they make them) most likely.

Re: Modifying a soldering iron?

SWIM cannot see any benefit to be gained from using a soldering iron to burn gear. If you want to have the most effective burn, then buy a blue flame lighter, that will burn the stuff well.

The only advantage swin sees is that a Bunsen burner might burn hash well, without further research SWIM cannot say. SWIM has a Bunsen in the garage, he might give it a go, lol.

Good advice, Fango, but Cowboy thinks that's not entirely true. It would be more accurate to say that one should use a butane lighter, not just one with a torch flame. Bute burns cleaner than that fluid crap; its only products when burnt are CO2 and H20, both of which are harmless. Cowboy would only use torch lighters if smoking a spliff, blunt or cigar. If using a pipe, it is much better to use a pipe lighter with a candle flame. In these lighters, the flame comes out the side, so one never has to worry about burning his fingers again and the flame is easier to control. Cowboy doesn't like that torch lighters produce too much heat.

Re: Modifying a soldering iron?

SWIY doesn't need to modify a soldering iron to use it to light his bong etc, just make sure it's clean! A brand new soldering iron is fine to use, but a used or old iron will have flux and all sorts of crap on it from use and use as.. well.. a soldering iron.. and SWIY doesn't want to be breathing any of that in!

A new (cheap) soldering iron can be bought for a few pounds (several dollars) if you look around pound (99c) shops or them kind of places.

Just wait until it's hot, then touch to SWIYs green or herb of choice.

The reason people might want to do this instead of using a lighter is because there is no butane etc to be breathed in, it's as clean smoking with a soldering iron as it is doing 'solar hits' using the sun and a magnifying glass.

Re: Modifying a soldering iron?

swim understands that ceramic tips are generally used for this purpose. Swim highly doubts any residue from a used soldering iron would make it as far as the lungs, especially if you cook with a flame or leave turned on for half an hour. Swim has read a few glowing reports on using a soldering iron to light bowls. Swim thinks the difference in taste due to no butane combustion products is BS, there maybe a change in flavour but swim thinks more likely due to slower heat transfer to plant material - resulting in less combustion and more vapourization.
