The strangest bar of chocolate I've ever had AND What's your favorite bar?
I've NEVER felt trepidation about putting chocolate in my mouth until today. Chauao Chocolatier's Firecraker, 60% Venezuelan cacao, chipotle, salt, popping candy. This stuff wasn't cheap, but when it comes to luxury consumables, chocolate is THE most affordable. You can get the very best chocolate on the market for under the cost of a single dose of most street drugs. I'm a chocolate snob, I don't touch anything by the major manufactureres, I want to know where the cacao was grown, what percent of the bar is solids and there damn well better not be any wax, though I'll admit, I do on rare occasions get milk chocolate if the admixtures are intriguing enough (Vosages Bacon Bar). I've had chilies, lavender, bread, salt, roses, and the aforementioned bacon, but never carbon dioxide in my chocolate.
Carbon Dioxide, most commonly used as an admixture to beer and certain types of wine, years ago some weird psychonauts mixed it with oxygen to form Carbogen, a near death experience delivering mixture with a wide margin of safety. Oh and Pop Rocks, a popular American candy from the 80's that was little chunks of sugar that exploded in your mouth. Trap the CO2 in the sugar and as the sugar dissolves the pressure blows it apart.
This is an incredible bar, perfect texture, spicy chili kick, the salt brings just enough savory to keep the sweetness well balanced and the mouth feel is like no other chocolate. The popping really works here, lord knows why. I'll admit there's a bit of a strange aftertaste, but it really isn't enough to detract from the shear novelty of this bar. It would be a most amazing accompaniment to mushrooms, if handed out in the middle of the trip, the popping has massive potential for amusement for all involved. I really suggest you pursue this bar with extreme prejudice and let nothing stop you from getting one.
5 stars
I've got more bars to review, but right now I've got to get ready for camping. Hopefully some of you have eaten some decent chocolate, and are willing to do write ups. Please don't post about Hershey's or other garbage "chocolate food products".
