How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

I have a problem with (hypochondria) anxiety and insomnia. Now my doctors prescribed me Valium and Rivotril. However I read that they can become tolerant and addictive and then I have to take higher doses. Can I prevent this from happening by taking it every second day or would it suffice if I only leave it out on the weekends? Or should I take valium one day and rivotril on the next day? Thanks for your help.

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Rivotril and Valium)?

The only problem with benzo's is that even when used occasionally the addictive effect can sneak up on the user. Giving these meds for hypochondria is not the best option, (although swim is not swiys doctor so she isn't saying it's wrong) in swims opinion. Could swiy ask their doctor if there is some form of therapy to look at why swiys health is such a worry to them? There are lots of topic here that answer swiys questions, use the search engine.
Please be aware that stopping them abruptly can cause seizures and in some cases these can be fatal.
Not trying to panic swiy, just helping swiy stay safe.

SWIM agrees with the poster above, great information. swim is not sure about the medications being correct, but swim has learned that tapering down the benzo dose every few weeks to half of what is normally consumed helps keep the anxiolytic effect intact for swim, so It's a possible solution. tolerance to the foggy feeling SWIY may get from the meds will dissipate more slowly, there was a study on this swim recently read, if found will document. anxiolytic effects tend to stay while tolerance to the sedative hypnotic effects seem to disappear first.

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

The doctor has prescribed me 2mg Rivotril for taking each night before bed. I have decided to take .5 mg before sleep. Seems to work better than the Diazepam and I used previously. Had a good nights sleep and feeling quite well today. Will take another .5 mg today night and the next one on Sunday night. Would that be a safe way to take?

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

SWIM has been taking benzos recreationally (and for anxiety) every week at least once or twice a week for close to a year & he can say from experience that tolerance even at such infrequent doses (compared to dosing everyday) is inebidable...The anxiolytic effects of benzos however dont dissipate much at all even when tolerance to the euphoria/sedative/calmness effects of benzos manifest itself.

Does this mean that even when the tolerance happens that the benzos will still work against anxiety and will only have no sedative effect?

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

Swim found that once tolerance developed, the dose had to be increased. She had to continually keep increasing the dose for the effects to work on her anxiety. And high doses of benzo's actually caused anxiety for swim.
Not sure if this helps, just how it worked for swim.

But usually how long does it take until a tolerance takes place? I have read on some board some people have taking them regularly for several years at the same dose however the benzo always worked as they were supposed to.

Swim can't say, everyone is different. But swim is aware that benzo's are only supposed to be a short term answer to anxiety problem.
When swim got used to a specific dose she had to increase that dose for the same effects to be noticed. She's also aware that the effects are so nice that people take a larger dose than prescribed to increase that feeling, and that's where it becomes a problem.

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

Swim is aware of that as the doctor has prescribed 30 2mg pills for one month. However the doctor will probably will have no objections to give me another 30 clonazepams for another month.

Swim's top priority is to keep the anxiety away and good night sleeps during the week so Swim can be fully functionality during the week. If there were other effective meds which would not be tolerant and addictive then would be happy to know.

Have tried valeriana and other herbal stuff for sleep but none worked just that Swim would wake up in the middle of the night anxious and in sweat. Xanax was no so effective either. However 0.5 mg Clonazapem had given Swim 2 good and relaxing nights and sure would want to keep it that way.

Swim doesn't really know what else would help, she doesn't know enough about natural remedies.
But she does know that anxiety is usually a symptom of a deeper problem. Is there no way swiys doc can refer them for counseling, or perhaps to a psychologist? Benzo's are not usually a good long term solution.
Swim is aware that due to location and cost this might be unfeasible, does swiy have anyone they trust they can talk to.
Talking, and off loading problems can be cathartic, and swim found this quite helpful.
Also identifying what it is that actually causes the anxiety and working out strategies to cope also helps.
Hope something swim has suggested has helped.

Re: How to not get tolerant on benzodiazepines (Clonazepam and Diazepam)?

It is a little hard because the docs in my country are easy in giving out meds. Will have to do a little research because swim wants to cure anxiety using SRIIs or cognitive behavior however have not found any means here yet.

Thank you for your words and assurance. Much appreciated.

It's great that swiy is researching this. The better informed they are the more options swiy has. It's good to ask, sorry swim couldn't be of more help on this.
Good luck though.
