Drug info - Did my friend smoke Heroin?

I was recently traveling in central America, when I was given a room in a hostel with an Italian. When I walked into the room, the Italian was laying on the bed, looking strung out, heating up sticky balls of a black substance and inhaling the smoke through a straw. It looked like opium. I asked him what it was, but he was really out of it, and told me some slang I had never heard of. I asked him if that was Opium, and, as if that was a dumb question, he looked at me, called me stupid, and said it wasn’t opium. Then he handed it to me and was telling me to take a hit. I took a tiny hit, just to lightly feel it and see if I could figure out what it was. It deffinately mellowed me out, but I couldn't tell beyond that. He wouldn’t tell me it’s real name, and to this day, I don’t know what it was. I didn’t think that it tasted like opium. It definitely wasnt hash. Could it have been black tar heroin? Are there any other drugs that look like a sticky black ball?
