Boulder man dies after drinking poppy pod tea

A 19-year-old man who drank poppy pod tea -- brewed from the plant from which opium is derived -- was found dead in a Boulder home Tuesday morning, according to police.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was found by his older brother not breathing around 6 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 4300 block of Hanover Avenue, police said.

Witnesses told police the brothers had consumed poppy pod tea somewhere in Boulder around midnight Monday and then came to the house on Hanover Avenue to visit friends. They fell asleep around 4 a.m., police said.

Two hours later, the younger brother was found not breathing. His older brother called 911 and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

This morning's death is the second suspected poppy tea fatality in Boulder in just five months. On Feb. 22, Alex McGuiggan, 20, was found dead inside his residence on Moorhead Avenue. The coroner’s office later determined that he had ingested fatal quantities of opium from poppy tea that had been brewed at his home.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office has yet to determine an official cause of death.

Police said poppy pods can be purchased over the Internet, but they are not necessarily safe and in some cases, can be fatal. Depending on how they are used, they may also be illegal.

"Poppy pod tea is an opiate. People take the poppy pods and boil them in water to make a drink,” Detective Jeanette Cunning, of the Boulder County Drug Task Force, said Tuesday. "It's not an extremely well known drug and people don't really know the effects of it yet."

No arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation is continuing.

Re: Boulder man dies after drinking poppy pod tea

I would bet toxicology will show poly drug use. Sells news on slow news days. And apparently a site well know for below par pods. Problem for enforcement is Nixon changed the law in the 70's from the Harrison act to a "possession with intent" law. So if your intent is flower arranging ...

The bay is not the only source for pods, and many times not even the best source. The competition provided cheaper prices many times, but it is often cheaper depending on the season..

I was thinking the same thing, While poppy tea isn't one of the more commonly abused substances in western society the effects of opium are pretty well documented.

Sad.

Re: Boulder man dies after drinking poppy pod tea

I found a website ran by the parents of a young lad who did overdose brewing from poppy seeds.

The website has this to say...

" He had taken poppy seed tea several times, always using the exact same amount of seeds (3.5 lbs) and same preparation. The last time he took it, it resulted in his death due to morphine overdose. The autopsy revealed a morphine concentration in his blood and urine that was higher than the lethal levels (click on Coroner's Report, above, to see details). The coroner's lab also analyzed an infusion of poppy seeds prepared with the same batch of seeds and confirmed that the concentration of morphine was extremely high and had the same morphine-codeine signature detected in the autopsy (see lab report, above). This ruled out the possibility of morphine also having come from an additional source other than the tea, like pills or injections. How could this happen? Clearly, the supermarket had received a new and different batch of seeds, with significantly higher morphine content in them."

PoppySeedTea.com

Not sure of how much the young lad took but the website does go into that detail.

Needless to say, researching any drug is always a good idea.

Re: Boulder man dies after drinking poppy pod tea

Well how pathetic is THIS??? Sigh, I guess I'll have to find a local floral supplier to provide these lovely pods for my arrangements! As I understood is, these beautiful pods are perfectly legal when purchased for decorative purposes. Wow, I just hope they don't clamp down on sales of poppy pods across the board. Jeez.
