Do MDMA precursors used affect quality?

I wanted to post this in the chem section but i'm a newbie..

A lot of old timers brag about how today's MDMA can never beat the old school pills. but to me MDMA is MDMA no matter if it was synthed using safrole in 1985 or whatever new precursors they are using today.

I am no chemist, so i was wondering if anybody knew that since people are uing easier/more feasable means of making this beautiful chemical would change the quality and effectiveness.

again, to me 100mg MDMA should = 100mg MDMA.
