Busted! (Hong Kong and China)

Up to 700 people, many from Hong Kong, have been arrested and detained for up to 15 days following weekend drug raids on Shenzhen discos and clubs.left align image
The police operation is seen as an attempt by acting Shenzhen mayor Wang Rong to uphold a promise he made to Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam- kuen last month to step up efforts to curb teenage drug abuse. The Futian district-wide raids began around 2am on Saturday. The area includes Queen's Road, a disco, which is popular with Hong Kong teenagers.

According to reports, the 300 arrested in the area included club goers and members of staff. Amounts of drugs "ice" and ketamine were seized. There were another 400 arrests following raids at clubs in Tsai Tian South. A dozen or so of those suspected of more serious offenses, such as possessing large amounts of drugs, were sent to prison.Others, including those testing positive for drugs, were being held in detention centers across the city for between five and 15 days according to local laws.
Local Shenzhen residents are among those arrested.

Police in the Futian district have been swamped by Hongkongers seeking news of their relatives and loved ones.Lo Wu was expected to be the target of similar raids last night.Tsang and Wang met last month to discuss the possible passing on of information from Shenzhen authorities to those in Hong Kong, regarding teenage drug users.

Law enforcement agents on both sides agreed to step up cross-boundary monitoring of drug trafficking and dealing.Wang has also been furthering the country's commitment to tackle sex, gambling and drugs exploitation.
