Modafinil for (short term) sleep replacement

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Modafinil is that it can be used to stay awake for a couple days without incurring sleep debt.

SWIM is going to have to stay up all night and doesn't have time to catch up on the sleep. Should he take modafinil when he would have been sleeping, the next day, or both?

What kind of doses are needed for this effect?
