a couple of months ago swim was living in the states and had a very bad cough so the doctor prescribed him a cough syrup with codeine and promethazine...swim cant remember the name but was wondering if its possible to get it in Canada without a prescription ? and if swim can get the name of it ?

Not possible. The syrup Swim is referring to is obtained by prescription in Canada as well.

Swim was looking around and found one source that said no brand names for codeine and promethazine cough syrup are available (that it is available only as a generic).

Another source said codeine containing products are available OTC in Canada only if they contain at least two additional ingredients (such as aspirin and caffeine). Thus as BALL3R pointed out, the codeine and promethazine cough syrup is probably not available OTC in Canada because it has only one ingredient in addition to the codeine.
