How long does tea keep for ?
Hey guys
SWIM is being made to go home and visit his family for a week or so. Despite objections his monther has reminded him that she pays his rent, and so he should play nice. As an antidote the obvious boredom and insanity coming from sitting in his teenage room for days on end, SWIM was thinking of taking some pod tea in a back with him. Thing is, he doesn't know how long tea will remain potent for after its extraction, and how being cold would effect it. Any help would be appreciated. In all honesty SWIM doesn't want to be caught in his parents kitchen making mind warping drugs, especially opiates, but he thinks that tea is the most socially acceptable way forward. Any thoughts ? |

Re: How long does tea keep for ?
SWIM had the same question once, did a search, got an answer.
Anyway, not long. A couple of days, if not placed in the freezer. However, SWIM once took some tea that was four or five days old and it was all right. SWIM had mixed it with a lot of concentrated lemon juice for acidity that one time, he suspects this might have prolonged its life. It loses its potency, as I understand, not that it's extremely dangerous to drink something slightly gone bad. SWIM has been thinking about preserving it in liquid form, but he figures one would first have to reduce its volume considerably, by evaporation or ice-o-lation, and then mix with something like alcohol, but it is just a wild guess. SWIM has no experience or background knowledge regarding this. Last edited by kant; 01-07-2009 at 10:42. Reason: More information |

Re: How long does tea keep for ?
SWIM was stuck at a cabin with his parents for three days in a similar situation. Instead of making tea at his apartment beforehand, he brought ground dried pods in a bag. SWIM simply boiled water, added some lemon and carried the water back to his room where he put a dose of dried pods in the water. Although this didn't extract all of the alkaloids, the tea was still quite potent.

caltrain's method sounds like a solid slurry solution. just downing the plant matter with the liquid should make it plenty strong.

Re: How long does tea keep for ?
Actually it starts to ferment after a few days and is still safe to drink. If you add sugar to feed the natural yeasts on the poppies, you can make an interesting beer. Mind you, interesting does not mean "tasty and delicious" and it is well recommended that you add spices such as ginger to help it go down better.

Re: How long does tea keep for ?
SWIM noticed after only a day of being at room temperature that his tea started to go off. It smelt like cabbage when opened and hissed like a bottle of pop. Not good.

Re: How long does tea keep for ?
that's just the yeasts getting going turning sugars into alcohol, while fermenting poppy seeds alone will get really gross, with the right mixtures of citrus, spices, and sugars...
