Lasting brain problems?

I was just wondering if anyone knew whether or not these mushrooms are ok for the brain. I looked at the other section for "health" but could find nothing related to this. I can deal with liver damage, however I will not risk brain damage.

Re: Lasting brain problems?

As long as you don't hallucinate brain worms into reality and then get brainworms you'll be fine, if you do end up with brain worms you'll need to hallucinate up some sort of anti-brain worm medication, which is going to be difficult at best and the worms will already be gnawing at your brains making you dumber by the moment...

All kidding aside, these mushrooms can cause seizures and comas in cases of large over doses, both of which can result in lasting brain damage. But in proper, small doses, no, they won't.

Don't think liver damage can be taken lightly, once you fuck up your liver, you're going to have to change the way you live and what you put into your body or you'll die, if the destruction of your liver doesn't kill you in it self.

^ What potter said.

If one chooses to try, it would be advisable to dry the mushrooms (at certain temperature). That breaks down more toxic ibotenic acid to muscimol. Check out Petri's info on it on erowid: http://www.erowid.org/plants/amanita...fo_petri.shtml

Re: Lasting brain problems?

The biggest risk in taking Amanita Muscaria, is mis-identifications.

ID and pick them yourself, it's not difficult. I you do purchase from a vendor, use only the sections that you can confirm have a red cap with white "warts". Any loose stems / gills etc could potentially come from one of the deadly Amanitas. I normally discard these.

The key about using Amanita Muscaria, is the dose AND frequency of use.

A good start is 7.5gr dose, not more frequent than once every 14 days.

I normally sun-dry mine for good preservation and then put in a 95deg C oven for 15min before crushing, then make a tea with just-below-boiling water. Let steep for 30min. Drink tea and crushed mushies.

Slowly work your way up until you have found your best dose.

NJOY!

Fortunately, A. muscaria is a very distinctive-looking fungus, so you'd have to seriously fuck up to confuse it with any other species. Edit: though as you say, there is a theoretical possibility of getting the wrong sort from an unscrupulous vendor - I was thinking more about picking it oneself.

I think it's a relatively safe drug as long as you prepare it properly, so as to convert *all* the ibotenic acid into muscimol. Bear in mind that ibotenic acid is used in animal experiments as a brain-lesioning agent.

Say that phrase out loud to yourself..."brain-lesioning agent".

Re: Lasting brain problems?

Wait! I thought amanitas are not dangerous for liver!
Now correct me if I'm wrong, will they cause a liver damage?

Re: Lasting brain problems?

Eh...SWIM wrote it while really high - must stop doing that.

I guess you have a point, I think what I was trying to say was just have a look around here or elsewhere on the internet, as I think this issue is quite widely discussed. Basically it's the deadly poisonous Amanitas (Death Cap, Destroying Angel etc.) that contain amatoxins, which attack the liver. As far as I know there's nothing specifically hepatotoxic in A. muscaria - or at least, if there is, it's much less bad that amatoxins. I've heard milk thistle is good at protecting the liver, so you may want to take some just in case.

Looking back it is a bit of a patronising post - I just get annoyed with "Is this drug dangerous/safe?" type questions, but that's not really what you saying.

Um, did I ever say it was illegal? Think you're confusing me with someone else.

Edit: while we're on the topic, erowid says they're illegal in Louisiana "when intended for human consumption", and possibly banned in Israel as well.
