Improving the taste of inexpensive wines through aeration
Swim has found that some wines, especially inexpensive wines, can have a somewhat sour taste right out of the bottle. Aeration seems to improve this taste quite a bit in swim's opinion. There are many articles on wine aeration on the web. Some show fancy decanters and such, but swim just uses a couple dixie cups.
Swim aerates the wine just by pouring it back and forth between two cups. This method is simple and fast, leaving more time to focus on other things. After about a dozen pourings back and forth the wine is nice and frothy and often has a more tolerable taste. Then after a dozen times or so pouring back and forth, the wine is ready to enjoy! In this case with some powdered kratom: Swim likes to use red wine especially for potentiation of other drugs, but doesn't want to spend more cash than needed on wine. So swim buys a local wine in 3 litre bottles. Some bottles are ok and some are downright nasty. The ok bottles seem to taste good after aeration, and the sour bottles are at least tolerable after aeration. "One bottle of wine and two dixie cups" as Kenny Chesney sung it

Wow, very good idea! Swiv finds that letting the wine "breathe" sometimes isn't enough. Thank swiy so much for the TEK. She will try this the next time she buys a bottle.

This will certainly work, but I don't think you can beat a decanter as a thing of beauty!

Re: Improving the taste of inexpensive wines through aeration
Yes it is not as elegant as a decanter, but it works in a pinch and requires no cleanup. Well it requires no cleanup depending on how far out of it swiy is and how much of the wine gets spilled on the floor, countertop, bookbag, shirt, etc.
After seeing some nice decanters though they do look tempting. |

I've always been rather fond of the "duck decanter"

Re: Improving the taste of inexpensive wines through aeration
Oh wow, those decanters are all beautiful. Swiv can't drink a lot since she's on meds, so it's not a justified purchase in Swiv's world right now. Oh, but they sure are pretty and elegant.
She still can't wait until she can get to the state liquor store for a bottle just so she can try the technique shown in the TEK (and finally break in her new glasses too!). |
