Re: Cannabis DECRIMINALIZATION Petition to Congress (US only)
What's the rationale behind the not-for-profit transfer of 1oz? I don't really get the bill, for the sole reason that I doubt it would pass. Many in the country & congress already vocalize support for STRICTER penalties on marijuana. A bill legalizing the possession of 3.5oz + legal transfer to other individuals has almost no chance to pass, and more conservative individuals will have a strong 'beggars cant be choosers' approach here. A more modest bill, removing the transfer clause, and allowing personal possession up to 1oz, however, would have a much greater shot at passing.
It's the not-for-profit transfer part that's really gonna get it shot down. Who's to determine whether money was involved, or not? How exactly does one prove that? "Officer, don't arrest me, I dont have 4.5oz, I have 3.5oz and I was about to transfer (not for profit) this here ounce to my buddy in the passenger seat right when you showed up!" It just makes it a million times harder for police to determine, what is legal marijuana and what isn't. And when the police have trouble determining the law... well, it's gonna be us, the marijuana partakers, who suffer, not the police. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely support marijuana decriminalization (or even better, legalization+regulation). Just thinking bureaucratically I dunno how much of a chance it has in the current political climate. Or maybe if this were proposed to a state congress (say, California) as opposed to Federal Congress where it just isn't gonna happen. Edit: I'm hoping that this bill is a ploy. Congressman Barney submits this bill, it gets shot down, then he proposes a renovated bill which asks less and gains greater support? Let's hope so. Last edited by EscapeDummy; 19-06-2009 at 21:46. |

Re: Cannabis DECRIMINALIZATION Petition to Congress (US only)
Unless you get a seat in congress and can pull together something better, this is all we've got. Let's be happy for that.
Of course it's not going to pass... the hope is that it will bring much needed debate to congress over the subject. The bill is flawed, but so are most... let's just run with it.
