Health - Which opioid do you find to be the most constipating?

In SWIMs experience, opioid abusers are more likely to discuss matters of this nature than the general population. Perhaps it is because of the profound effect that the majority of opioids produce upon the gastro-intestinal tract. Constipation is one of the worst adverse effects of opioid abuse, and in SWIMs opinion any information that has been collectively accumulated by us should be shared and utilized to minimize the impact this scourge upon our lives.

Swim has noticed that the degree of constipation he endures varies considerably depending on the particular substance inducing it. In his experience, the single substance that had the greatest effect was insufflated morphine, however, many of his friends and acquaintances disagree and it would appear almost everyone has a different opinion.

Swim knows a lot of this is based on individual metabolism, but is still curious to see if some sort of consensus can be reached. So, which do you feel holds the dubious title of "The most constipating opioid"?

Seriously though, of the opiates/oids Swivy has taken (all of which include: codeine, hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and fentanyl) morphine wins hands down in terms of constipation. No matter the route of administration or amount ingested, morphine plugs her up like no other. It's really funny SWIM posted this, as Swiv was contemplating this during a long session of excrimeditation just today. She was also wondering what other SWIMmers do to combat this issue.

That last thing you said, about what to do about this issue...
well, swim has used senna tablets before when he had a really bad habit with little effect, aside from maybe a cumulative one. Eating a high fiber diet also seemed to be of little benefit in these cases. The only thing that really worked when he was doing ridiculous amounts of opioids was using a oral saline laxative containing a sodium phosphate / dibasic solution. It was quickly effective, without much of a lasting effect beyond the onset discomfort and initial purge.

SWIM tries what SWIM laughingly refers to as "shitting tea". Yes, there's a tea for everything. It's actually for weight loss and SWIM gets it in SWIM's local Chinatown in the tea aisle. It's called Nutra-Slim, and the brand is Triple Leaf Brand. The herb is malva verticellatum (think that's the right spelling). Steep it for a few hours and drink, and make sure you are at home when it starts to work. Oh, and don't drink it and then take your dose, or you probably won't get an effect.

In the last 4 days swim has been using very heavily even for him, In this time he has had one very painfull bowl movement. He has been eating alot also because he usually gets munchies after using h that and he smokes alot as well.
Anyway to swims point. Once each day usually late he has been vomiting lots and lots. Swim wonders if the food is kept in his stomach much longer than it is supposed to be do to his use . He also wonders if this could have any healt concequences, ulcers,etc...?

Swiv is scared of nasty fiber drinks, but there are pills and wafers for this too. Swiv had lots of luck with fiber tablets and lots of fruit before she got on morphine for pain mgmt. Once the switch happened, she got way backed up, and not much--short of laxatives--seems to work. She takes docusate every day, but hates to take actual laxatives frequently. She'll look into the Metamucil pills or wafers. Maybe that will help.

Codeine for sure. He remembers having codeine years ago and being bunged up for 3 days solid. Methadone a close second

It is about using Subcutaneous injections of methylnaltrexone (Relistor) to relieve opioid induced constipation. This new (or at least newly used for this purpose) drug seems promising, and it would appear that it does not cause precipitated withdrawal.

Oh yeah, and swim agrees with Junk, to a degree, about codeine. He observes that both codeine and morphine are both non-synthetic alkaloids. Interesting.

Not necessarily, Swiv's insurance covers it as a tier 3 drug. So, some insurances do cover it.

And morphine really does seem to be the worst. Swiv is gonna try to get back on oxycodone instead of the morphine. It's horrible in the poo dept, and it doesn't even work as well for pain!

SWIM finds fentanyl to be very constipating, but for him hydrocodone and heroin were close seconds.

Not sure why but morphine plugged swim up all the time,unlike all else...morphine was by far the worst...shooting was the methode also...

for some reason, swim has been eating a lot of wheat thins and mini-shredded wheats this week, but swim also started taking 1 pill daily of aciphex for heart burn. 1, all, or a combo of these things has given swim his best week constipation wise in a long, long time. he has a solid bowel movement everyday for the past 3 days this week.

swim is on mmt at about 225-250 range of methadone daily. swim has had problems with constipation for 4 long years in treatment and this has been his best week ever. swim's not sure which of the above helped, but he feels it maybe a combination... or somehow related to Aciphex specifically because the symptoms include diarreha. whatever the case, swim is damn well estatic that he doesn't have to divert his dosage and go through w/d near the end of the week to have decent movements before his pickup (or otherwise force, strain and bear down to move 1 or 2 hard, balled, sphincter-ripping, clumps of insignificant-but-strangely-WIDE turds a week instead).

billions of oxycontins and lortabs and swim's never had a problem.

a 3 day MS-Contin binge actually ended with SWIM in the hospital because he couldn't shit. eventually had to resort to "unpleasant" methods myself because the hospital didn't approve of SWIM'S plan

in swim's opinion, tramadol is by far the most constipating. swim has tried the whole spectrum of opiates/opiods, and tramadol just puts a clog right up swim's ass like no other. after 5 days of taking it, swim was forced to go buy some laxatives. let's just say that the ensuing dump was so dense and massive that it gave swim a lot more sympathy for women who have to give birth.

SWIM has fucked around numerous times with codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, yet has never experienced constipation. Could it be because he never re-dosed after the initial effects wore off? Or does that still cause constipation in people...?

Some people dont experience constipation after continuous use and some get really bad constipation from minimal one time use. Like everything else its a matter of personal body chemistry. For swim it has to be lopermide.

Wow. swim figured that we would have a clear cut winner by now. And yet heroin and morphine are still tied in the polls, although morphine seems to be this threads anecdotal winner. Oh, and in response to all the people talking about how long it takes constipation to set in, swim can only speak for himself, but the only time it becomes a problem for him is when he is doing massive doses of opioids around the clock for a couple weeks straight.

Yep Morphine is awful for the constipation. On that note, Swivy finally got back on oxycodone, so hopefully that will alleviate the poo issues. Codine and H both turn into morphine after ingestion, so they were probably picked because of that, but Swiv could be wrong. The natural opioids seem the worst for this issue.
