C-15 is a bill that has made its way through the House of Commons and is now on the path to the senate. If C-15 is made a law there will be Mandatory Minimum Sentencing for small time drug users and distributors. Only 1 plant will get you 6 months in prison and if you are part of a trafficking operation (3 ppl or more) you will get minimum 1 year in prison. Trafficking (aka any possession of 30 grams or more) would also be a mandatory prison term of 6 months. An extra 3 months would be added onto the term if the trafficking took place near an area where children play, parks or near a school zone, as well as if violence or a weapon is involved.
Mandatory minimum sentences have been a proven faulty way at dealing with drugs, while countries such as Mexico, the Netherlands and Portugal that have alternatively decriminalized drugs have much better drug use/ abuse, addiction and related death statistics. This bill must be stopped. The effect that it will have on our economy will be detrimental; the last thing we need is more of our tax payers' money going to the "justice" system.
