poor mans laudanum question

Swims dog obtained 25 poppy pods and was looking for an efficient way to extract without having to deal with nasty tea.....so swim found a tek that his dog is following but he barked a couple of questions to me,so i thought mabey some of you more experienced swimmers might be able to help swims dog, clear up a couple issues. Here's the tek as follows :

Start with 1/4 lb. finely ground poppy heads, a coffee grinder does the job. Dump this in any big, fat, sealable glass container. To this You simply add 1 pint of good quality 80 or 100 proof vodka. After mixing this and letting it settle there should be about an inch of free liquid at the top (considering you used a quart jar), if not, add enough to bring the level up. This should be put in a dark place for 2-3 weeks, shaken well every day.

The solid should then be separated from the alcohol, yielding about 12 ounces of liquid, 4 ounces still remaining in the pulp. You then add 4 ounces of vodka or distilled water to the pulp and shake well, separating again which yields 4 more ounces. Each tablespoon contains around 3.5 grams of pods.

If you want you can then do a double extraction with your poor man's laudenum, though a little is lost in this second process, yielding around 6.5 grams per tablespoon. It is best to keep this in an amber glass bottle, otherwise it should be kept out of the light.

This will keep for at least three years without losing potency. For those with a high tolerance and shitty pods it is recommended to use eighty proof vodka and using distilled water in the last process instead of alcohol.

Question : it sais to use 1/4 lb of powder....well swims scale batteries ran out so he had to eyeball the powder but it was no where near 1/4 lb (atleast thats what swims dog said)so he just split the powder in half for the double extraction.

So he poured it into a measuring cup and it measured out to be about 2 cups of powder, so he ended p putting it in a quart jar and added a little over 2.5 cups of 80 proof vodka. Now the tek calls for about an inch of vodka that should be in excess above the powder. There is excess vodka in the quart jar but it isn't at the top of the powder for some reason it's staying at the bottom and the powder doesn't see to want to settle to the bottom forcing the excess vodka to the top.....and this is after much agitation.

Finally swim got batteries for his scale and the remaining other half of the powder is about 61 grams, so he's wondering if 2.5 cups was enough vodka.

his last question is that it sais to let it sit for TWO WEEKS!!! So swim came up with the idea of putting the quart jar in a crockpot (hotbath) to help speed up the process.Do you think two weeks is really nessicary....i was under the assuption that most of the alks are extracted within the first 2-4 days especially if there is heat.

Anyway's I know this is a long winded question but if any swimers have experience with this tek and mabey able to help me give swim a couple of pointers...the feedback would be much appreciated. Much thanx

Good cheap TEK. Would work well in theory as long as one could get their dosage right, Caution is advised here.

1/4lb = 112 grams.

As long as everything else was equated around the same (which it is only just slightly out) it can be adjusted visually. Just add a little more vodka like it says.

2 weeks of maceration would not be needed. If one were to do it with a powder and just agitate it by shaking the bottle vigorously a few times a day then that would be enough. About 2 or 3 days of this should suffice if not excessive.

Peace
