will suboxone delay full detox?
Swim is looking to kick. Gotten way out of hand. Can find suboxone, but does it help you kick or is it just a substitute like methadone? SWIM got a week off work so he will go thru whatever needs to happen ....hopefully. Would rather go cold turkey and be done with it than use subs to help and still be dependant.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: will suboxone delay full detox?
Yes it will delay the process, but if you taper on it even for a couple days (preferably about a week), it will make the withdrawals a LOT more mild than doing cold turkey from a full agonist opiate (like methadone, heroin, oxycotin, etc.). It is also very easy to taper on, again comparatively; dropping from say 16 mg to 1 mg within a week or so going down 2mg steps is not very painful.
Also, suboxone/subutex is best used within a month long taper at most (maybe a little longer). Once your body becomes too accustomed to it, the withdrawals are said to be horrible and last a long time, as opposed to short and mild (relative to other opiates) using it as a faster taper. People who have been on suboxone/subutex maintenance for many months, to years, for instance, have a very hard time coming off of it. SWIM did a 7 day taper starting at 12 mgs and going down to 2 mgs before cold turkey, about 3 months ago. It was no where near as bad as heroin withdrawal. Sleeplessness, restlessness and depression were the worst symptoms - it did not have the excruciating and horrifying symptoms of heroin withdrawal, and SWIM had been on heroin for about 4 years straight (daily, except the occasional and sometimes frequent day or 2 of withdrawal before scoring again) when he did this. Hope that helps! Last edited by dyingtomorrow; 02-06-2009 at 03:48. |

As dan said, SWIM felt partially sick most of the time, and very depressed and had this weird feeling of emptiness which was very disturbing. Also the heroin cravings were almost worse on suboxone because of how awful it made him feel. The only reason the 7 day taper worked for SWIM was because he was in the middle of nowhere in farmland Iowa with no place or means of escape. But he also has to admit that it was no where near as physically painful as heroin withdrawal. No where near. |

Re: will suboxone delay full detox?
Swim forgot to mention something which dying touched upon. He did onetime successfully taper with subs. He did this by taking just enough with him on a trip with friends to last the first couple days and then compensated with bud and brews. Of coarse this didnot last. He was back for maybe 2-3days before going back but it was a good 2 or 3 days
