Different Types of Salvia
I have been researching different types of salvia (other than divinorum) . Im am curious about whether or not other strands of salvia are able to be extracted to produce a mild or similar effect to salvia divinorum. I have read threads about Salvia Nemorosa "Caradonna" and I learned that depending on the extraction methods it can be used for antinociceptive purposes which is good knews to me, but I would like to know if salvia strands such as Bonfire, Hotline Violet, and Victoria Blue. If any one has information please post a comment on this thread it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Different Types of Salvia
no, Salvia divinorum psychoactivity is pretty unique.
there might be other salvinorin containing sage (salvia) out there, but they won't be the kind of sage sold for ornamental purposes. Officinal sage has been used for centuries in western pharmacopea, but this is still very different from Salvia divinorum's psychoactive effects. please read the rules straight away as this post seems on the verge of turning into self-incrimination |

Re: Different Types of Salvia
How is it possible to incriminate myself if I am pursuing something that isnt illegal? Sounds like bogus to me, but I appreciate the info it will turn out to be very useful

Re: Different Types of Salvia
Please do not self-incriminate when discussing use of ethnobotanicals, legal or not
(it's a sticky here...) "Do not self incriminate, even if it's legal for you" - I'm confused Noob Survival Guide: Drugs-Forum 101 happy reading <sigh> b |

Re: Different Types of Salvia
Divinorum is currently the most active Salvia known. Most, if not nearly all others, are simply ornamental/landscaping plants. Some are purported to have low-level herbal effects (positive mood etc.) but nothing that can be said to be more than placeabo.
Nemorosa is said to be active, however not at the level of divinorum, and AFAIK is the only strand whose effects can be said to clearly depart from placeabo. However, there is often confusion about the actual strand... |

Re: Different Types of Salvia
s. divinorum is already not a terribly potent drug (since they have to extract stuff to get half the world interested). There would be little point in extracting from any of the others anyway. Also, if you are going to list strands of plants, be sure to list genus and species because you will often find that there are often 3 names for plants and many plants which are called "sage" or "salvia" may not necessarily be either. For instance, with coleus plants (which have said to be psychoactive to a degree somewhat, the coleus blumei I believe, whatever), many different plants which have a coleus look to them are called coleus when they are not even a coleus plant in actuality. This confuses many people, so be sure to get the right name. Some names are standardized for some plants (such as heavenly blue), but with so many names flying around, it's best to just use their scientific names.

Re: Different Types of Salvia
I think my answer would be that since Salvia Divinorum is psychoactive due to a very specific substance (Salvinorin A). Not only was the plant itself unique to a very specific reigon of central America, but the substance itself was unique for a number of reasons (which I won't go into).
I think most likely if other plants in the salvia genus were to be pschoactive, either they woud be so for an unrelated reason to Salvia Divinorum, or they might contain the same/similar substance - which would mean it would probably be even rarer as a plant. |
