Water and Cocaine HCL
Would appreciate your thoughts on this...
When Cocaine HCL (CHCL) is dissolved in pure water and left in solution in a sealed container, what happens to it? Does it go through a chemical change? Assuming one were to evaporate the aqueous CHCL solution immediately after making it, would it return to a usable form? Not crystalline, necessarily, but a usable powder? Merci. |

Re: Water and Cocaine HCL
cocaine hcl is a polar compound, that means that the HCL portion of the molecule is bound on the cocaine part of the molecule via electrostatic forces which are kind of weak
water is a pollar solvent meaning that some of the H20 breaks up to H2+ O- that is so when cocaine enters water the HCL portion gets sarounded by O- and the cocaine molecule gets sarounded by H2+ so it completely dissolves. When you evaporate it the inverse happens getting back cocaine hcl just as when you started |

Okay, that makes sense. It should work the same as a simple ionic compound like salt. I was wondering if the cocaine molecule might suffer from being dissolved in water... didn't know how robust it was.
So, an update. SWIM dissolved 1 g in water and filtered. The filtrate was put into a glass dish and heated to around 90C for several hours. As the water evaporated a thick goo formed which was aggressively hygroscopic and the drying slowed noticeably. The color of the good went from clear to a slightly yellowish tinge and then cloudy bits and bubbles began to form in the goo. Heat was continued until the bubbles and cloudy bodies filled most of the goo. By that time the goo had taken on a noticeable yellowish tinge. The goo had become rather hard and could be scraped off the glass into fine sugary crystals, quite hard at first, but with continued working they turned clumpy and a bit waxy. The consistency seemed almost like freebase - very strange, as the coke had only been dissolved in distilled water. Perhaps if it had been cut with baking soda this reaction could have produced some freebase? The yellowish fine crystals (now clumping together) had some interesting properties. Insufflation produced a noticeable stinging. Taste is quite bitter. Anesthetic effect after about 1 minute. Crystals dropped into bleach dissolved rapidly, dispersing into cloudy trails by the time they'd fallen 8 cm. When placed on a thin sheet of foil the crystals burn away to a small reddish brown stain, producing copious white smoke. The smoke seems to have freebase-like effect, though not the usual freebase flavor. The smell of the smoke is almost neutral - no indication of burning sugar. Throat numbing occurs in about 1 minute. It was an interesting experiment. Clearly, there's an anesthetic present, and the stimulant effect shows there's probably cocaine present. Any thoughts?

Re: Water and Cocaine HCL
SWIMs friends monkey, Conchita, who lives in Mexico, once dissolved cocaine HCL crystals in a suitable amount of distilled water, then tried to evaporate it.
Unfortunately, the resulting product was a sticky, yellowish gum. Crystals did not re-form. The gum had an anesthetic effect, however, when it was combined with some other inert powder (in order to try and "dry" it up) and snorted, no positive effects were noted. Not sure what Conchita did wrong, but it would be good to hear of similar experiences and ideas as to what this could be? |

Re: Water and Cocaine HCL
Swiy can get only nice crystals in process of correct crystalization (base converting to hcl process with right actions and knowledge). In this way with evaporating - its impossible to have nice crystals. So be happy with that what you have
And question: why swiy dissolve C in water and keep it in container etc...??? Just curious Swiy dont need to answer if he dont want...

Basically the reason was to wash the crystals that had grown on the sides and bottom of the beaker off, rather than scrape them off... Not to worry, life goes on
