Christian Rätsch his book Encyclopedia of psychoactive plants is great.

I know of no complete compendium of chemical drugs. It is still to be written. Alexander Shulgin's books ( PIHKAL, TIHKAL, The simple plant isoquinoles) and trouts notes are my major resources for this. The Merck index helps as well.

On medicines there are references for MD's & pharmacies.I do not know their names in English. I use dutch ones and my study books. DSM4 may also be handy for reference. pubmed is also a great reference.

Hey,
The doors of perception is a good book that talks about psychoactive drugs. It's a good read. Haven't read it in a while though

Yikes, really? I found it dry and slow. Perhaps in its time it would have been fascinatingly new and fresh, but the effects of mescaline and others are not that novell in literature these days. It also doesn't really cover a lot of different drugs, but focusses on a select few.

For good reading on a wide variety of drugs (especially obscure ones) you really can't beat the net.

Check out the PDR (physician's Desk Reference). It has every prescription drug available in there. All the effects, side effects, usage, contraindications, etc.

I’m just curious on this. Does anyone know or thinks (as I do with my slight but protective paranoia) that the DEA or some law enforcement agency tracks the purchasing of multiple drug-related books, especially those which discuss production methods. I have come across many books with interesting information which surprisingly also include chemical precursor information, synthesis, dosages, etc. I mean it’s a pretty scary thought if for example lets says amazon or another major online book retailer had a system implemented to report such activities of subsequent purchases. This of course can be bypassed by purchasing from various sources but it has always bugged my mind when I came across such books.

I doubt that they specifically track purchases of drug related books, but if you buy something online or with a bank or credit card or if you simply do something that has an electronic record, there is a very good chance that it will be stored.

Here is a quote that I pulled off the web: "Large scale data analysis plays an increasingly important role in law enforcement and counter-terrorism. Detection of many types of criminal behaviour requires recognizing and drawing useful inferences from information embedded or implicit in huge quantities of data. Important
aspects of data analysis include data mining (discovering relevant information in data bases), information extraction (finding stereotypical patterns of information in free or semi-structured text) and evidentiary reasoning (drawing causal inferences from relevant information)."

If you pay with a credit/bank card, buying at different locations isn't necesarily going to help much. Pay cash. Don't leave a trail.

Books about drugs

It Would be nice if there was a section dedicated to books. People can post the tittle as top in the body post author a brief synapses(sp?). Good books about drugs is something I can never read enough of, I would love to read other peoples opinions from this site about books so I can find new ones to read.

Here's a good one (you can only buy used tho, it's out of print):

"Burn down the Night" by Craig Kee Strete. (drug/party fiction)

Nicaine personally gives his highest recommendation to this book. It's a fast, easy read with an awesome re-readability factor. May be hard to find, but well worth going out of your way. Strong focus on LSD, but almost everything is covered.Edited by: Nicaine

I've been reading a lot of david sedaris lately. He is the only writer that can make me actually laugh out loud to myself as if I was watching a film. I just finished "me talk pretty one day" and I thought it was amazing. This is one of his most recent books and when Im high I love to pick up anything he has written to justlaugh. He is a great writer, very satirical in his comedy, semi-biographical, but some of his stories are so outlandish that you have to question where the line is drawn between fantasy and reality. That is what I love though, he seems to be so involved that even he probably cant tell if a certain situation did in fact happen. I apologize for only mentioning one author but he is the paramount writer that comes to mind when I think of great booksI've read recently.I am interested in reading the da vinci code, would love to hear your thoughts on it and Dan Brown as well.

does anyone know the deal with the books Pharmacotheon and Pharmacophilia by John Ott. I mean what 's in those things for 150 - 250 bucks. You'd think the pages were all dipped in lsd or something. There must be something of great interest in those books. I haven't read any reviews on either of these yet. Why so expensive?

The Flesh of the Gods is an amazing book, I recommend that everyone read it. I enjoy Castaneda's books, I recently found "A Separate Reality" in a stack of free books at my school. Sweet!

Buzzed seems to be a very popular reference book, I've seen it everywhere. I've read it, and although it is pretty good and mostly non-biased I disagree with some points they make.

A great reference book is "From Chocolate to Morphine" it's got pretty much everything, overviews of all major drugs from ketamine to smart drugs, a little history, trip reports, etc. Very well written.

"Ecstacy: The Complete Guide" is another must read for anyone interested in or taking ecstacy. It's just got everything you need to know and much more.

I agree there does need to be a stickied book thread--- Reading about drugs never gets old

100 Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. best book ever.

Master and Margarita, Mikhail Bulgakov. best Russian book translated into English.

Diary of a Drug Fiend, by the inimitable Aleister Crowley, written almost 100 years ago, about a major coke / heroin binge across Erope and following detox. highly recommended.

I think I've recommended this book before in a different thread on books, but I must reiterate it "Rule of the Bone", by Russell Banks. Just an unbelievably good book about a weedsmoking punk kid who has a hard go of things but finds a father figure in this old Rasta. A modern day Holden Caufield.
