waking up early
SWIM keeps getting this problem now, it started off every now and then and now its every time swim gets drunk. Swim wakes up at about 5 o' clock in the morning feeling very thirsty, (swim leaves a pint of water next to the bed when he goes to sleep after been drinking) then swim cannot go back to sleep at all!
swim would appreciate help

Re: waking up early
Drink more water before SWIY goes to sleep. Used to happen to SWIM and as you said he would wake up extremely thirsty. Lately SWIM has been chugging much more water before bed though and besides for a bladder reason the sleep seems much better.

Re: waking up early
There is also a rebound effect with alcohol, esp those who drink large amounts regularly (ie daily). It is similar to the dopamine rebound effect of GHB, but is more like the effect of a mild benzodiazapine withdrawal in that the effects are less dopamine specific and hence less pleasant. With more consistent, constant drinking, this effect becomes more obviously a withdrawal syndrome, including tremors, neuropathies, anxiety, agitation, sweating, etc. Dehydration also can cause sleeplessness, but the withdrawal effect is what wakes you up. Drinking large amounts of water before sleep helps a great deal the dehydration, but will wake most people up about the same time with a need to pee. SWIM will take the morning bathroom trip over the dehydration any day, though.

Re: waking up early
Swim also gets this early waking in the morning from consuming alchohol, but also Xanax, all mood stabilsers, some benzo's and GHB. Swim has had a genetic test done on his methylation cycle and based on the results it appears swim breaks down Dopamine very slowly. Swim can't tolerate any uppers at all.
So my guess is you also struggle to break down dopamine, the alchohol (Gaba)will contain the dopamine untill about 4 to 5am and then release it .This will make you wide awake and impossible to fall asleep again. Swims solution is to pop a 1mg Xanax and get fantastic snooze for the rest of the morning...Hope this helps. |

Re: waking up early
SWIM used to find that eating a meal after drinking allows SWIY to get a much better night's sleep. Beware, though, this makes you get pretty fat quite quickly.

Re: waking up early
Swim drinks a lot (most nights a week) and he always wakes up early. Though for Swim it's not a problem because he has to wake up early for work anyways. So if swiy is like swim, then swiy is probably drinking too much too often.

Re: waking up early
if dopamine rebound is the cause, it is based on both frequency and amount drunk at one time. Some are more tolerant to these effects than others. SWIM has found that having some weed near bed when SWIM wakes up helps SWIM get back to sleep - sometimes. If SWIM puts away 3-400ml of 40%,however, waking up is guarenteed about 6 hrs after finishing the sauce.

Re: waking up early
SWIM would definitely go wtih the advice of drinking half the amount of water compared to the number of drinks consuimed. That's what he does and it works. Try and down a bottle of water in the midst of the drinking too, it doesn't hurt.

Re: waking up early
SWIM has the same problem Just found a answer.
as you drink alcohol, you increase your blood sugar levels, as you sleep, this sugar level drops. The adrenal glands kick in when your blood sugar drops and wake you up. Sometimes, if you eat something with crabs or sugar (i.e. a sandwich or warm milk with sugar or honey) the body gets the sugar it needs, the adrenaline goes down, you relax and then can go back to sleep. |

Re: waking up early
When SWIM drinks alot he tends to wake up really early, and very thirsty, and then obviously drinks a hell of alot of water but what is very strange about this is when SWIM gets up, he is up, but when its the morning after he can go downstairs and still goto bed and fall asleep with ease. Not entirely relevant but thought id share that.

How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
When consumed to the point where the user is no longer legal to drive(0.08 BAC in the U.S.) or barely legal (several drinks), but not so much that the user is completely shit faced, how does it affect SWIY's sleep?
SWIM finds that being intoxicated makes him drift off real quick, but wakes up really soon. |

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
SWIM falls asleep easy but wakes up within four hours of falling asleep. He usually cannot fall back to sleep, but still feels tired.

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
apparently crookedeye, that is something to do with a bounceback in blood sugars caused by procession alcohol (SWIM watched a bbc documentary the other day but can't remember the details)
SWIM sleeps like a hibernating bear after a glass or so of red, or indeed, any alcohol. |

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
Y'alls are unlucky. When Swim drinks ANY amount of alcohol, (as long as it's less than the amount required to still be drunk/buzzed 12 hrs later) he crashes hard, and wakes up the next day... usually feeling refreshed. He doesn't know why, but he's thankful of it.

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
For swim, to drink to that point i'd fall asleep, or swim would start to keel over onto a friends shoulder, kinda wake up, then fall back asleep. Swim would struggle to stay awake and seriously state that she isnt drunk (NOT AT ALL!! lulz).
Swim sweats whilst she sleeps if she just drank. but once she falls asleep, she'll wake up when she realises she's late for something (ie someone calls her to remind her she's late). [hah not really, she's rather on time for most things]. |

But, several of my friends have told me a similar thing as you haha. I may feel a little shitty in the morning, but the main thing is I sleep like a rock after drinking. I've never awoken in the middle of the night, or even early in the morning; unless I HAVE to wake up, I'm out for 8-10 hours lol. The only thing is it feels like I got less sleep by an hour or two than i actually did, but I always sleep without waking up. |

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
Alcohol is the perfect sedative for Swim having him drift off at will and without any trouble....expecially beers it seems and #5 always seems to be the magic number where he could keep drinking and stay up or hit the hay....when a night of drinking whisky is planned though, the circumstances change completly becuase sleep will normally be out of the question for most of the night as the randomest things seem to happen lol.

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
When swiM's goomba falls asleep with a fair amount of alcohol in his system (enough to feel a good buzz or be drunk) he sleeps very lightly and wakes up almost exactly 8 hours later feeling as if he didn't sleep a single wink. It's the worst sleep ever haha.
It's a miserable feeling lol. However if later the goomba takes a nap later it is very refreshing

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
SWIM's body wakes him up very early in the morning after every night he's ever drank to excess. Usually 6 to 9-ish AM. It can be hard for SWIM to sleep when only slightly drunk or buzzed.
SWIM theorizes that his body wakes itself up early because it becomes very dehydrated over night while processing the booze out of his liver. SWIM also usually wakes up with little more than cotton mouth and slight, but quickly passing nausea. SWIM generally feels upbeat, somewhat well rested and oddly refreshed instead of hung over. |

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
Moderate alcohol consumption 30-60 minutes before bedtime catalyzes disruptions in sleep maintenance and sleep architecture that are mediated by blood alcohol levels. Disruptions in sleep maintenance are most marked once alcohol has been completely metabolized from the body. Under conditions of moderate alcohol consumption where blood alcohol levels average 0.06-0.08 percent and decrease 0.01-0.02 percent per hour, an alcohol clearance rate of 4-5 hours would coincide with disruptions in sleep maintenance in the second half of an 8 hr sleep episode . In terms of sleep architecture, moderate doses of alcohol facilitate "rebounds" in rapid eye movement (REM) and stage 1 sleep; following suppression in REM and stage 1 sleep in the first half of an 8 hr sleep episode, REM and stage 1 sleep increase well beyond baseline in the second half. Moderate doses of alcohol also increase slow wave sleep (SWS) in the first half of an 8 hr sleep episode. Enhancements in REM sleep and SWS following moderate alcohol consumption are mediated by reductions in glutamatergic activity by adenosine in the central nervous system. In addition, tolerance to changes in sleep maintenance and sleep architecture develops within 3 days of alcohol consumption before bedtime.

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
Quote:
Melatonin. ![]() A hormone directly involved in feelings of drowsiness, induction of sleep, sleep maintenance, and induction/maintenence of the REM cycles. Melatonin release is controlled directly and only by specific ligands of norepinephrine. Alcohol is a general CNS depressant, that increases activity of GABA across the board (subtypes 'a' and 'b') and weak antagonization of the NMDA glutaminergic receptors. It indirectly inhibits the release of norepinephrine due to the heavy GABA presence that alcohol causes. So because alcohol stops norepinephrine from being released, it also effects melatonin levels significantly.... decreasing quality of sleep. |

Re: How does alcohol affect SWIY's sleep?
I sleep (Can I say I? Drinking is legal right?) very well when I have been drinking. Almost crossed the line of alchoholism once when dealing with insomnia. Using alchohol to get to sleep. Not a great lifestyle getting shitfaced every day.
