depressant drugs?

Hi there, I'm quite new to this forum but I have a question to ask on behalf of SWIM's hamster

is there any kind of drug, legal or illegal, that has a depressant effect on the user? SWIM's hamster knows there are a lot of anti depressants on the market, and was just wondering if the same was the case for "depressants". SWIM's hamster knows about various downer drugs, but as far as he knows they are more about making the user feel drowsy and relaxed, rather than unhappy. Do they actually exist? What kind of effects do they have? Or is SWIM's hamster going up a dead end?
