Effects - Effects of Opiates?

SWIM has misconceived notions about opiates, and doesn't really trust much of the literature he reads online.

He would like to propose the question :

At different doses, is coming under the effect of an opiate racemic? depressant? bewildering? purely euphoric? SWIM is referencing prescription doses, to a first time opiate user.

He always thought of opiates as causing one to lose connection to his body of sort, to feel fantastic and wallow in the euphoria of pleasant feelings. He sees heroin depicted as sliding into a user's arm and him slinking into himself with a smile on his face.

Is it largely dependant on the dosage? Or do the different opiates all have unique trends?
