Opinions - What are some good liqours to use in making LAUDANUM?

What are some good liqours to use in making LAUDANUM?

I know Samuraigecko recommends Cognac but I really can not stand the taste of it. What are some other types of alcohol that would be good for making laudnum. I know Whiskey is bad because of the acetic acid content. Any help is greatly appreciated.
