Anyone else out there have an experience in one of those isolation
chambers, or floatation chambers. Like seen in the movie Altered
States?

That was very interesting and impressive. No drugs at all, and just to
be sure there was no residual drugs in my system, I abstained for 1
month before my appointment to experience it. I wanted to know for sure
if it worked or if it was bunk, so no drugs at all, not even a joint or
tobacco. Spent 90 minutes
in the tank, but when they came to get me out, I couldn't tell you if
it was 5 minutes or 5 years! I felt physically and mentally
re-born after I came out. Very healing in a number of ways. The glow of
that lasted me for a couple of
weeks.

I tripped balls hard in there, visuals, sounds, the works. With the
water being the same temperature as the skin, and being nude in there,
After just a few minutes I couldn't tell where "I" ended and the rest
of
the world began. Truly an out of body experience. I have to
get one for the house now. It was totally pitch black dark and sound
proof in there. The only distraction at all was the slight smell of the
epsom salts that were dissolved in the water. It was a horizontal tank,
about 5 feet wide and 9 feet long, the water in there was only 10
inches deep, and there was 1,100 pounds of epsom salts dissolved in the
water. Float right on top of it, your ass never touches the bottom of
the tank. I could spend many hours each day in there
if I had one.

Highly recommended experience.

I want to try it with drugs some day.

Your experience is interesting, BrugmansiaBrujo. Altered States</span>
was inspired (very loosely) on the life of John Lilly, who developed
the isolation tank. One of Lilly's friends did "meta-programme" himself
to regress into a stone-age consciousness, before taking ketamine, but
it wasn't as lurid as the movie.

John Lilly's books about his work with the flotation tank have made me think I would like to get one.

I have been looking at web sites like http://www.samadhitank.com/

who made the first tanks. There are a lot on the market, but there are no prices quoted. They must be expensive, I think.

Does anyone know how much?

The prices I've seen for used tanks range from 2000 to many more thousand dollars. It should be cheaper to just build one, but I imagine it would be difficult.

Here's a link to floatation therapy locations in the UK:

http://www.cyberfloat.clara.net/5.htm

The guy I went to float with had samhadi tanks, and he actually worked
with Dr. John Lilly before the good Dr. died. I floated in San
Diego, CA.

Just do a google search for "floatation therapy". There are more
locations out there than most people would suspect. You don't
have to go to some obscure left-wing University to float. Even
some chiropractors have integrated float tanks into their therapy.

There are plans for home-made float tanks out there. A large part
of your expense in building one will be the 1,100 pounds or so of epsom
salts you have to buy. If you try to get that much in the drug
store (they sell it there for folks to soak their feet in, in little
bags/boxes) you'll surely go broke.

I asked my float therapy guru where he gets his, he said a chemical
supply house, they can deliver it wholesale by the truckload. And
you'll need a truckload. He said it took him about two weeks
stirring the salt and water with a paddle to get it all dissolved.

I used to live near a cooperative that owed
several floatation tanks that were available for use at a small cost if one
joined. </span>Having read John Lily’s
experiences, I joined and made use of the tanks a few times. </span>The reduction in stimuli was interesting,
however, ultimately no more so than practicing sitting meditation on an ongoing
basis. </span>I dropped the use of floatation
tanks, but continue to practice meditation.
</span>The cooperative has since folded – people were initially keen to do it,
but lost interest.</span>

Having said that, it is likely that the
tanks would be very useful in conjunction with some drugs. </span>Closing one’s eyes and wearing a head set
that blocks out external noise can contribute to a very different trip with
inner focus and depth. </span>Floatation tanks
would potentially take that several steps further by more fully removing light
and sound as well as reducing other sensations.
</span>Having a sitter would seem particularly important in such a context.</span>

may i suggest a community project for creating a tank DIY kit, as the forum's contribution to the world? how do people here feel about this?

no way! i live in one of the crappiest towns in the country, it was once rated the heroin capital of england. but take a look at that link, under north west england you find "Aqua Sulis (1 Float Tank) 12 Carlton Road, Worksop, Nr. Yorkshire, 881 7LW 01909486666." which is just up the road from me. interesting. thanks for the link.Edited by: billyloner

Yea, I went with a mate too, but we had to wait on one another and compare notes later.

I thought it might be interesting to do it simultaneously, and try and tune in to each others trip or psychic vibe like that.

I have a tank in my home. Normally 45-75 minutes once every few days is nice. Everyday would be great. When I go longer than a week and just don't take the time I regret not having done so sooner.

Don't do it with music. Just wax up your ears and make sure note of the water gets in it. I read this erowid report that said that the user experienced crackling sounds in his ears for weeks, simply from the dried up salt.
