One Methadone Myth
Methadone was never synthesized by the Hoechst chemists because
of an instruction of "the nazis". It also was not part of the standard equipment of the soldiers, as even some Physicians tell their patients still these days. Methadone was found after a series of experiments that started in the 1920ies, when germany was a democratic country with a capital where people enjoyed dancing charleston and sniffing cocaine. The chemists at Hoechst were searching for substances for pain treat- ment, and synthesized "Aminophenazone" and "Methamizole", the 2nd still used today, known as "Novalgin" and several generics. Methami- zole was found in 1921. On their search for (stronger) analgesics with anticonvulsant effects they then found "Pethidine", also still in use today and known as "Dolantin, Demerol, and many more branded generics. Pethidine is an Opioide with anticonvulsant effects, and was the substance that "the nazis" were after, of course. Pethidine was synthesized in 1937. It was tested for it's pharmaceutical characteristics in 1939, but put on the market in the same year(!) It was also 1939, the year when Methadone was synthesized for the first time, after the chemists were running a series of experiments with "basic substituted diphenyle derivatives" (i hope i translated right) On this experiments Methadone was found and got registered at Hoechst using the number "Va 10820". The analysis of the pharmaco- logical properties of "Va 10820" were done for the first time in 1942. Small amounts were given to the leaders of the "Wehrmacht" (german nazi army),but there is no evidence, that Methadone was widely-used in Germanyduring WWII. Not in the Army and not on the civil people. It was Pethidine, that besides of Morphine was used in the mobile army surgical hospitals. And during the last year of the war, only the high ranked soldiers got Morphine or Pethidine when an arm or a leg had to be amputaded. My grandfather didn't tell a lot about his life in the army, but he told me once about amputations that werde done with giving the patient some vodka (or simply nothing) while his leg got cut off with a bone saw. There was not enough Morphine, Opium or Pethidine for those poor pigs. (yes, you call them nazis. but my grandpa was not a nazi. he wasn't asked if he would like to fight and kill, aged 17 he was given a gun and that's it) It is said that Methadone was dosaged to high in the first tests on hu- mans, and too much negative side effects were shown, so they kept on concentrating on the Pethidine production. The end of the story: The Methadone patent got part of the spoils of war that the US American army took home from Germany, a few years later Methadone was put onto the market in both countries. To come to an end: Of course the nazi regime put a lot of pressure on the pharmaceutical industry in germany during 1933 - 1945. But still today it is nearly impossible to create a drug on demand. So you could imagine that 70 years ago expedient drugs were found accidentally, and though all the improvements in drug finding and drug designing, accident still plays a role in drug finding today! The story of finding Methadone is a story that begun in 1884, when at Hoechst "Antipyrin" was synthesized, "Pyramidon" followed 1897, then Metamizole followed 1921, and in the twenties they started to syn- thesize the first methadone-like substances. BTW: to those of you who understand german or if german is your native language, i could give you the link to the .pdf written by Ralf Gerlach, also a list of sources used he used to write the article is available. (Ralf Gerlach is one of the german luminaries of the specific field "opiate addiction, treatment, politics concerning add- icted humans, drug history...) Re: One Methadone Myth
A drug squad police officer told my fiend that methadone was made to kill Jews during the holocaust and that it rots your bones. My fiend didn't argue with him and just appeared surprised at what he said.
People say it stays in your bones i don't think that is true but it does get stored in fatty tissues and can stay there for quite some time because of the huge half life, to get the facts on methadone read the Methadone Handbook. |
