I have a color changing glass pipe

It changed from clear to dark blue and has some colored "lines"

I got it for free (well I had to share some to get it)

Searcher, that's cool that you have a color changing pipe, now you should relize that most pipes are color chaging pipes. It is a chacteristic of the glass. When resin builds on it, and the more it is smoked the more color it will change. i bet in your dark blue your starting to get a little whiteor some light color... if u dont scrape it you will keep the colors and if you go on past white it will become a gold (from my experience)

Regarding color-changing pipes, what exactly causes the change? I
assume that since it's glass the chemical properties aren't actually
changed, but more-so the physical properties, i.e. light shining onto
the resin?



SWIM has a pipe that started off as milky clear with a few lines
running through it, and now the colors have changed to shades of blue
and yellow. How can the resin cause such a variety of colors?

It could be heat. SWIM might try heating a small area with a lighter to see if there's any effect.

Why bother? just smoke more weed and if your pipe wants to change colours it will

I read somewhere(Grasscity.com I believe) that a chemical is added in the process of glass-blowing to the glass to make it change colors. It's not heat, have you ever cleaned your pipe? Without the resin it goes back to clear

Dont take a lighter and hold it to the outside of the bowl, because there is nothing on the outside that is going to change color. The part that changes color is the part where the smoke goes through. I have found that if you smoke a lot then you will have more color. It seems to be the more resin in the bowl the darker, and once it gets a nice layer of resin then it becomes the heat that changes it. Most of the time my bowls go through the same color changing process... Clear -> Purple -> Light blue -> Dark blue -> White -> Gold... Scrape and start over


As for the chemicals i'm unsure of this, but i have bought bowls ranging from 15$-150$ and they have all changed colors. There used to be a blower that had a site and went by the name of california color changers, but sense i havent been able to locate them. Also the glass that i have heard has the best color changing properties is "chemialian (major spelling error) glass"

Apparently, California Color Changers went out of business or something. I found a site with an old link to the site. When getting onto the site, it read:

I saw their site a while back, their stuff looked pretty nice.

I also did a search for what they put in color changing glass, but all I found out is they add "a special supplement" or something like that.

Hmm a "special suppplement", eh? I'll have to look into that. I've always thought it would be awesome to learn to blow glass. Making pipes is an art form in itself IMO

they have special sparkly paint or glass on them, and only certain colors work. After resin builds up, it makes the pipe look a dif. color in that spot

i read somewhere a long time ago that metal is inlaid in the glass and the heat warping and changing that color of the metal, plus the resin build up helps accentuate the colors of the piece. but if the metal is warped, wouldn't the pipe shatter? i dunno.

Is swim the only one involved with glass blowers? The glass changes colors depending on the fuming that is done. You can use differant precious metels to fume with. Differant metels are used for fuming for differant colors and the intinisty of the colors .. the most common ones are gold, silver, platinum, and copper.

when the pipes are new, the colors are not as visible, not to me anyways. I have to turn the pipe around in different lights and look closely at the glass to sorta see the colorations.

But later (after lots o' smoking) the expression of those colors still isn't permanent. I know from one of my old-roommate's girlfriends. she had a TOTALLY resin-filled little glass pipe, and it was darkly pigments in swirls, etc. When she put the pipe into boiling water and table salt, the pipe slowly turned clean, the colors went away, and the glass was back to white--kinda like when it was new.

Then, with her "new" pipe, over the next few weeks, after the accumulation of smoke particles, it slowly turned back to the other deep, swirly colors.

Ya the colors are always there, if you look closely you can see the fuming even with a brand new bowl, but as resin builds up behind the glass, a mirror effect happens and the colors reflect much stronger. So its not exactly color changing glass, its color-enhancing-due-to-pot-smoking glass

Pinkavvy is correct the blue is from silver. Pipes fuemd with gold have a rosy color to them. Platinum and copper swim has not seen used much> When one buys a new piece hold it against a black piece of material and one can see the colors it will change before using it. Its the black backing or resin that allows on to see the fuming
