Mephedrone violent convulsions: hospitalisation

A Mephedrone experience.

Disclaimer: SWIM first became aware of mephedrone products starting with the original neodoves maybe 2 years ago, has introduced them to several friends, and generally enjoyed the drug. SWIM is aware of its "moreishness" and current legal loophole, and considers it a worthwhile drug in the right circumstances. SWIM has not had nor seen serious negative experiences with it until last night. SWIM is not trying to scaremunger or cause panic, the text below is just a description of what happened tonight.

SWIM and several friends decided to take a "bubbleluv" mephedrone pill. All but one of them had tried it before. After roughly half an hour the one person who was new to it indicated they felt the effect start. Five minutes later the friend had to sit down. Another five minutes later, the friend was convlusing violently, had to be carried into an ambulance, and taken to hospital. The friend was not new to drugs, and was on no other medication.

The staff at the hospital were given a left over bubbleluv pill and the names "mephedrone", "4methylmethcathinone" and "bubbleluv" but had no information on it at all.

After roughly an hour SWIM was allowed to see the friend, who still had involuntary movements, and appeared to have paranoia or even hallucinations that family members had been told of their condition and were in the hospital. The friend obviously did not want them to know what had happened.

After another couple of hours the friend had stabalised to the point where they were lucid enough to hold a conversation, and made the decision to stay at the hospital for monitoring as heart rate was still high, roughly 120 BPM.

Nobody else in the group had an adverse reaction to the drug, and luckily were able to sober up quickly and deal with the situation as best they could. A drink of coffee at the hospital to try to calm nerves was not a good idea as it only resulted in everyone coming back up again.

SWIM said this was a pretty scary experience, but in the end it looks like the friend will be ok. SWIM just hasen't seen many accounts of an adverse reaction like this and felt the need to write it up to warn people that it can happen. Considering the number of people buying this substance SWIM was surprised hospital staff had not heard of it.

Thanks for the report, it's important people know about the possibility of adverse reactions like this

Re: A Mephedrone experience

Doctors said she had an epileptic fit. She has no history of epilepsy and is well beyond the age by which it usually first presents itself.

As a result, she now cannot drive a car for 12 months.
