Bleeding Pods Before Harvest
Archie got to thinking the other day - that usually gets him into trouble...
Let's say Archie has 10 papaver somniferum plants, exact same breed, and each with a single pod approximately the same size. They've all dropped their petals about a week or so ago and are close to harvest time.
Archie will leave 5 of the pods intact for another 3 or so days before cutting them down and hanging them upside down to dry.
Archie would take the other 5 pods and make 4 small 1/2" or so horizontal/angled cuts toward the top of the pods and let them bleed for the final 3 days before harvesting. Archie will NOT scrape any of the latex from these 5 pods unless they are about to drip off the pod.
Archie assumes the weather will cooperate with his experiment, so no rain or dew and reasonably mild temperatures (65 to 80 F). Archie will cut the "bleeding 5" down and also hang them upside down to dry.
Will the pods that were cut and allowed to bleed have MORE alkaloids by weight than the pods that were left intact?
If Archie were to use each batch of 5 pods for either poppy tea or CFO, would there a difference in the strength of the final product?
How long does it take poppy plant to "replace" the latex it bleeds when it's cut?
Does a poppy plant have a maximum amount of latex it can bleed before it exhausts it's own supply?
Again, Archie's been thinking again...
Thanks in advance.
