Cannabis isn't a controlled drug, it's an illegal one. The practical upshot of this is street supplies are contaminated and, it seems, an ever more regular basis.
The first mass scare we were aware of of course was "soap bar", adulterated hash. Then came microscopic glass beads sprayed into herbal cannabis, recently we heard of lead shot being added and now we have the latest reports of contamination: Liquid containing homosildenafil and thiohomosildenafil - which belong to the same class of 'erectogenic' chemicals as sildenafil - more commonly known as Viagra.
UKCIA first heard rumours of this a couple of weeks back but we've just had proper confirmation as it's reported in the recent article in Forensic Science International - for which New Scientist (1/11/08) gives the reference DOI: 10.1016/j.forsciint.2008.09.002 - by Dries de Kaste et al, at the National Institute of Public Health & the Environment in the Netherlands.

Dries de Kaste and colleagues at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, the Netherlands, analysed a liquid that police found being sold on the streets of Utrecht as a "marijuana adulterant".
They found compounds called homosildenafil (HS) and thiohomosildenafil (THS) in it, which belong to the same class of compounds as sildenafil, sold as Viagra. All three inhibit the breakdown of an enzyme that dilates blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow.
De Kaste does not know why HS and THS are being added to cannabis, but speculates that it could be to enhance the uptake of its psychoactive constituents, or to exploit a perception that marijuana use affects libido.
HS and THS were not destroyed when they were "smoked" using a laboratory simulator
(Forensic Science International, DOI: 10.1016/j.forsciint.2008.09.002). The health effects of inhaling such "erectogenics" - and the compounds they produce when burned - are unknown.

This paper seems to be online on the Forensic Science International website, but is only available to subscribers and it seems impossible to even obtain the abstract.
Now whatever the dangers of cannabis may or may not be, clearly adding an unknown risk like this isn't going to reduce those dangers. We can only speculate whether our own government is aware of this issue and why they see fit not to warn the millions of cannabis users that could be affected by it.
Why isn't this information made public? Well, of course if the government made it known that prohibition was putting peoples lives at risk in the way that it is, perhaps people would start to complain about the stupidity of the policy that creates such a situation. That's why they keep quiet.

If SWIY are under 30 that was pretty stupid. Viagra can kill someone that age without any other substances involved.

The police constable new someone who was sold viagra as ecstasy, after an hour he hadn't come up, he just had a raging hard on for hours. kind of besides the point but shit like this does happen. (SWIM later found out these pills had been stolen from the sellers father lol)

I guess it comes with the nature of street drugs.

Getting completely off topic but it has to be said; anal play can be a hetrosexual thing aswell the chief constable knows girls who place things up their boyfriends arse's doesn't make them gay. i highly doubt that these viagra analogs where sold as cannabis adulterants. who would sell it as such? the growshops in utrecht? who would buy it as such? surely not the coffeeshops.

I don't think they have found any actual cannabis adulterated with these drugs however according to the UKCIA alot of contaminated cannabis bound for the UK is made in holland so it isn't unbelievable that this could be added to soapbar.

The chief constable would love it if JWH-018 was in soapbar, it would actually get him stoned for one thing. But seeing the as JWH-018 and other synthetic cannabinoids wouldn't bulk up the product much the chief constable can't see it happening.

Well, this is a bit concerning as cannabis smoking has been known to cause instances angina/chest pain. Many middle-aged people have prescription for NTG/nitroglycerin tabs for instances of angina attacks. Nitroglycerin when given/taken within 24-hours of Viagra or Cialis use can result in extremely low blood pressures and even death.

Another reason people would be considerably safer were they just legally allowed to grow their own cannabis.

I actually can't see the reason for this being used to contaminate cannabis, it's not very heavy, it's comparatively expensive, it causes more risk to users.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you put stuff in the hands of criminals.

There's no longer any FCC regulation, so people can sell these drugs any way they want. They can sell pot with viagra (or glass etc), mdma which is actually meth, not to mention the unfiltered impurities.

What happens if someone doesn't separate some dangerous reagent properly in the manufacturing process? In a lot of cases, that's completely possible.

When 40% of the population have smoked grass - just think what that would mean if they all smoked some poisonous adulterant in the process and died. Personally swiM is surprised it has never happened yet.

Brings to mind of the paraquat pot scare of the 70s, heard of people getting sick from it. The so-called experts said that the herbicide became inert when smoked, but swim never believed them.
