Comparing the Near-Death Experience to the Iboga Rituals

Article Published: May 2008

A few members have expressed active interest in any information related to Ibogaine, so I thought this quickie-read might be desirable. It's a short article (1 page) comparing the neurological substrates recruited in near-death experiences and those elicited by the Iboga rituals practiced in Gabon. Nothing conclusive is reached, but some interesting correlations are drawn. The authors propose that further pharmacological investigation of the two states-of-consciousness may elucidate closer relationships.

Re: Comparing the Near-Death Experience to the Iboga Rituals

[QUOTE] it is unclear how a neuroprotective effect that
can be observed tor weeks following local ischemia- could account
for an experience that lasts only seconds to minutes. And fourth,
this hypothetical ischémie neuroprotective mechanism would not
explain the majority of near-death experiences that do not involve
ischemia, such as in falls or automobile accidents.

it's refreshing to see an article with both sides, and a willingness to acknowledge confounds like those above. overall, great read and very interesting correlations.

good find!
