Using codeine -after- the stimulant comedown

SWIM told me the following:

"I know using codeine to come down off uppers (amphs, in my case) is generally not beneficial and not recommended, but I've been having success using codeine a little while after the comedown. I take a benzo as normal to deal with the negative after-effects of stimulants (not optional for me because I already have considerably bad anxiety), and then usually eat something because hunger tends to become relevant again. After that I would usually be fine and pretty tired, relaxed and able to sleep, but lately I've been having bad insomnia. Benzos aren't cutting it for purposes of falling asleep anymore. I'm tired of course, but sleep seems to elude me.

So lately I've been using codeine at this point of "unexplainable insomnia", and it seems to do the trick. Makes me happy (in a very sleep deprived and worn out state of mind, which is very welcome), very relaxed, and let's me drift off into a nice sleep. Even though codeine doesn't necessarily "make me tired" (because who wants to sleep when your feeling all good?), it puts me into a state of mind where sleep seems to come easy.

That's just what works for me. Everyone's different. But don't count codeine out as a sleeping aid. Clearly it works for me."

Re: Using codeine -after- the stimulant comedown

well, opiates are a CNS depressant, so naturally they make you drowsy.

Though, opiates put swim into a nod state for a while (can be an hour or two), which he enjoys, but is NOT getting good sleep during that time. Usually swim will nod for an hour or two.. then sleep for another 12 hours (unless he has to get up for work)
