Omega fatty acids

Someone told swim that he cured his ADD by taking fish oils and at the time swim didn't really give a crap because swim didn't know he himself had ADD but now swims regretting not asking this guy more. Swim started taking Omega oils yesterday and it says on the bottle "take 6 capsules daily for 12 weeks then reduce dosage to 2 capsules once omega fatty acids have built up sufficiently". So its an accumulative effect?

How long will swim have to take this stuff before he sees any effects? Swims real optimistic about this but he wants to hear other peoples experiences. Should swim take this stuff for 3 months before judging if its working or not?

Re: Omega fatty acids

HorseBucket,

I'm quite interested to hear how this pans out. I've never heard of treatment of ADD with fatty acids - I'm not sure how this would alleviate, or even modify, the proposed underlying neurostructural and chemical variations that generate ADD (dopaminergic genetic polymorphisms), but I'm certainly interested in how it might do so! The compounds have been implicated in so many different biological functions, that it wouldn't surprise me that supplementing one's diet with them would have some effect.

Have you done any reading on particular omega-3's like DHA and EPA? I've read numerous studies suggesting that the vast majority of the health benefits derived from the oils are conferred by these two fatty acids; perhaps you would observe a more dramatic change in behavior with a more concentrated supplement regimen? Alternatively, you might prefer to have more of a spectrum-effect to judge the effects. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Swim will keep you updated on how it goes. What swim thinks is ADD might be a blanket term that covers symptoms which may be brought on by a wide range of different nutritional deficiencies.

No haven't done any reading on any of this but swim just checked the bottle of "Eye Q" he has and EPA and DHA are the two forms of Omega 3 in this stuff. This stuff also contains Omega 6 (Gamma Linolenic Acid) and Natural Vitamin E. This product supposedly "helps maintain concentration levels and healthy brain development" so swim is fairly optimistic about this alleviating some of his ADD symptoms.
