Pharmacological Review of Ibogaine & Noribogaine

Article Published: 2008

A really great review article summing up the majority of current knowledge regarding the intriguing 'anti-addiction' drug. It has been characterized by extremely wide activity, including binding at sites on NMDA, 5-HT2, 5-HT3, kappa and mu opioid receptors, M1, and M2 (muscarinic) receptors. The article includes a chemistry section that discusses potential sources of extraction, as well as brief methods that one might employ. It discusses pharmacodynamic/pharmacokinetic characteristics of the compounds, as well as experiments utilizing it as a treatment for addiction. The article concludes with a discussion of the compound applied to humans, as well as unanswered questions regarding the compound. Here's a sample:

"After administration of 6–29 mg/kg dose of ibogaine, acute reduction in drug craving and opiate withdrawal signs and symptoms are observed in 1–2 h."

Table 2 is particularly interesting, as it compares the affinities Ibogaine and Noribogaine at SERT (serotonin transporter), mu and kappa opioid, and NMDA receptors with specific values.

Finally, the article gives a concise summary of the subjective experience of the compound. The researchers posit categorization into three phases: acute, evaluative, and residual.

This is one of the most interesting articles I've come across, in my opinion.
