DMT: A new role as a sensory neurotransmitter?

Article Published: 2009

Very interesting review article suggesting a role for DMT (and associated molecules) as a probable sensory neurotransmitter. They propose the endogenously produced protein, TAAR6, as a likely candidate for the compound's receptor - which happens to be distributed throughout the limbic and frontal cortices.

Re: DMT: A new role as a sensory neurotransmitter?

Sweet article, I'm always interested in DMT research.

There was an interesting statement that endogenous hallucinogens regulate our perception of the world. When the controls aren't working and the endogenous hallucinogens overrun their usual homes to play elsewhere, it leads to the abduction experience or a visit from god or schizophrenia (in a long term inability to control dmt).

Both of these articles can also be found in the "How does LSD expand consciousness?" thread

Incredibly interesting. Pretty much states what I've been thinking for years, and what many of the video's I've uploaded have been saying. I think that dreaming, NDE's, some psychiatric disorders, and various phenomenon could be explained by endogenous psychedelics like DMT.

Re: DMT: A new role as a sensory neurotransmitter?

^^ sorry for the "hit and run" as there's a lot more i'd like to say here (doing too much at once as usual), but when one combines the aforementioned substances, the presence of endogenous receptors for said substance AND the pattern-finding capabilities of the human brain, we see the both sides of the neurological coin (especially considering the distribution in the frontal cortex and limbic systems): we have an amazing capacity to grasp abstractions, but we also have an amazing ability to create false abstractions. and then there's everything in between to consider!

more on this later, esp if someone reminds me, lol

Well stated! This is clearly the beggining of a whole slew of studies on the roles of tryptamine neurotransmitters in the perception of various sensory modalities. Imagine, this study was only done this year - the upcoming decade should be a good one for endogenous tryptamines!

I hope we get the chance to read what's knockin' around that noggin of yours...
