Risks Associated with Oral Use of Oral DMT/Ayahuasca and Harmala Alkaloids
Article Published: 2007
Interesting and decidedly optimistic review-study on available information on the use of the psychedelic DMT, coupled with harmala alkaloids (MAOIs). The researchers compare the safety margin of the combination to codeine or mescaline - a pretty low and commonly acceptable threat potential.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A particularly supportive quote that I'd like to point everyone's attention to is on the 8th page:
"No acute health hazards, excluding potential serotonergic reactions, have been documented as a routine, serious threat from ayahuasca when ingested within the range of customary dosages."
as well as, in the abstract:
"Long-term psychological benefits have been documented when ayahuasca is used in a well-established social context"
Though the article also states, in its abstract:
"DMT is capable of inducing aversive psychological reactions or transient psychotic episodes that resolve spontaneously in a few hours."
Finally, on the 6th page, the article includes an interesting table that compares the subjective effects of a few subjects on two different 'expressions' of DMT: 5-MEO-DMT and Ayahuasca. Also included in the table are harmala seeds alone, as well as scopolamine. Crazy comparison.
