MAO-B Mediates MDMA-Induced Neurotoxicity in Rat Neural Mitochondria
Article published: 2007
For those who are interested, here is an article that identifies one potential mechanism for MDMA-induced neurotoxicity. There are likely other mechanisms of cellular degradation as well, but this does answer the question of whether or not MDMA is capable of classic stimulant-induced cell death. Unfortunately, it can induce an oxidative stress that neuronal mitochondria cannot tolerate - as well as delete mitochondrial DNA that will translate to failures in transcription of proteins that are critical to respiration. It is important to note that the study was assessing MDMA binges, and not acute dosing. |
