Ritalin - Tranquilizer to some, stimulant to others?
Ritalin hits swim like a heavy tranquilizer so he cant relate to people who say it feels like drinking 20 cups of coffee. Swims aware that people with ADD supposedly react to stimulants in this way. Although meth tranquilizes swim too caffeine does not so its not all stimulants that tranquilize swim.
Swims wondering why these stimulants tranquilize some and stimulate others. Is it a psychological thing or a physical thing? Conversely opiates and benzos stimulate swim which is unusual. Anyone here researched this? |

Re: Ritalin - Tranquilizer to some, stimulant to others?
well, when i was a regular user (by prescription) i found that it was like a tranquilizer for me. I quit using it becuase i saw no benefits to it (this was before SWIM became a drug user/addict) now i've gotten another script, it seems to affect me like everyone else.
but yeah, its weird. my mom (a nurse specializing in youth ADD/ADHD) told me that it was because the brain chemistry of some one who truly has add is different from an ordinary person. She feels that ADD is real and this is its manifestation. she told me this was why methylphenidate and amphetamines made me calm and boring while they made my neighboor bat shit crazy talking a million miles a seccond ect. but yeah, this is a very intersting topic. i would like to see what those more knowledgable than my self have to say |

Re: Ritalin - Tranquilizer to some, stimulant to others?
SWIM would tend to agree with a nurse on this topic.
Those who actually have AD(/H)D suffer from a neurodevelopment disorder; the parts of the brain that make it send signals don't work like they're "supposed to." Medication for such disorders stimulates the neurons in the brain, as well as causing the receptor sites to, well, receive better. For someone taking medication for this disorder who doesn't actually suffer from it, the result is usually a "speedyness" or likewise-describable occurrence. For those who do, it's a "mellowing" or "depression" of their normal state (though primarily only for those suffering from the Hyperactivity, or "H" part). Similarly, other recreational substances which cause a rapid increase in neurological activity function in much the same respect, as their components are often mimicked by the prescribed substances for AD(/H)D. So, for SWIY to experience "mellowing" or "depressing" (not psychologically depressing, but neurologically; think alcohol) from use of such substances is all a result of your unique neurochemical balance (or imbalance, as the case may be). |

It is stimulant euphoria that people react differently to.
The idea that ADD people have "reverse" reactions to stimulants is based on zero real data and is a nice urban legend. |

Re: Ritalin - Tranquilizer to some, stimulant to others?
Given that people with ADHD are medicated to calm a neurological disorder that causes hyperactivity (hence the "H" in ADHD), expecting to take that same medication to, in effect, become hyperactive seems rather counterintuitive.
And it's true people with ADD will respond to stimulants just like anyone else. But, note that ADD medication is a (or a derivative of) an amphetamine; Cocaine would have the same effect on someone regardless of AD(/H)D disorder, but meth(amphetamine) in smaller doses would act similarly to the medication they are already (or should be) taking. Same chemical family, and often incredibly close to the same chemical, especially when impurities in meth are taken into account. |
