Sweden - Mephedrone on the way to being classified as a narcotic

On march 26 a proposition from Folkhälsoinstitutet (FHI, People's Health Institute) was sent to the Social Department calling for classification of mephedrone, 4-methylmethcathinone, as a narcotic substance.

Since december 15th mephedrone has been classified under the aegis of the ban on certain chemicals detrimental to one's health, maing it illegal to possess and sell. If the proposition falls through, it will also be illegal to use and have in one's bloodstream, all behefted with heavier penalties.

FHI recieved it's first indication of the drug in Sweden during spring 2008 and later spreading fast during early autumn. FHI is of the opinion that there is a great risk for established abuse if the classification is not stepped up. Earlier classification as a substance detrimental to one's health hasn't in the view of FHI reduced use of the drug and abuse is spreading amongst youth especially.
