Please forgive SWIM

SWIM searched for a while but didn't notice anything answering this question directly.

Will poppy seeds bought at a store(ie. the kind on top of rolls and bagels) work as a tea? SWIM is very interested in this as he's heard nothing but great things about poppy tea and the like but he is nervous about purchasing things like this online as he is not well versed in good places to do this.
