Dried Poppys from Uk Garden Center

SWIM has just been to his local garden center (uk) and saw a bag of dried poppy heads for £2.99 which clearly stated "DO NOT EAT" so SWIM was just wondering are they likely to be the papiver somniferum kind? Obviously swim doesn't want to ask the sales woman, so is there any way of telling? any help is much appreciated, also if they're not, could swim be poisioned in a not particulaly nice way!! lol thanks in advance!!!

Re: Dried Poppys from Uk Garden Center

I suppose the species should somehow be indicated, perhaps a label on the pack?

SWIM has often heard of poppy pods treated with potentially poisonous chemicals. Some always suggest washing pods before use, even if they are quite certain they are all right. But SWIM has great doubts as to whether a simple wash can do much good to pods that have been chemically treated.

Anyway, looking forward to hear more on this.

Re: Dried Poppys from Uk Garden Center

From what I recall, all it said was "Do Not Eat", like swim would do that anyway!! ;-)

So what are you're suggestions, shall swim give them a shot, i mean for £2.99 you can't really go wrong, can you????

You can by, for example, dying from pesticides. Like peasants would print lies on their labels.

Re: Dried Poppys from Uk Garden Center

It is saying "do not eat" for only one of two reasons.

1] it really is poisonous from pesticides or insecticides or preservatives and can either kill SWIyou or make SWIyou sick.

2] it says it because they are from P.Somniferum and they MAY contain traces of goodies.

Either way SWIM would not be flipping the coin without true prior knowledge.

Another note on seeds. They contain very small amounts of goodies. The goodies they do have are not because seeds produce goodies but the goodies are actually residual from the seeds being inside the pod. This is often nullified even further by seed washing.

An example would be PST Vs PPT . . .
PPT would be anywhere up to 100% stronger than PST could ever be.

Peace
