Using psychedelics legally for religious reasons
SwiM knows that around the world, there are religious groups of all shapes and sizes that use psychoactive drugs as part of their rituals. Unfortunately, in many countries it is hard to do this because of the stringent laws on what governments refer to as "dangerous hallucinogens".
SwiM is wondering about the processes one would have to undergo to legally take part in these rituals, especially in modernized countries like Canada, the USA and Britain. SwiM understands that in isolated cases groups may be given permission to use ayahuasca, peyote and even magic mushrooms in their rituals, but what do these groups have to go through in order to get such permissions? Also, in these cases the people, even though they are using a drug, are doing so via the means of a natural container, what about using the drug as an extract, or even the synthetic form?
In other words swiM wants to know about the potential for using psychedelics for the purposes of true spirituality in a legal setting. Under what circumstances can this be done?
Note: SwiM also wants to mention that her belief system does not directly involve a god. It is a complex belief which isn't necessary to explain here but she felt that it was rather important to note that in terms of having permission for psychedelics to be used religiously.
