Fire-safe cigarettes feel different

Cally has smoked American Spirit for years. Despite that, and her other bad habits, she's tried to stay in shape. Cigarettes have never bothered her, much - never hurt her lungs, made her cough and hack, or made her feel nauseated - so long as she exercised regularly.

This changed a couple of months ago. She began to feel a bit dizzy when she would smoke, and two smokes in a row made her lightheaded. She once threw up after a couple of puffs (granted, she was hungover, but that was NOT the first time...just the first time she ever threw up the next day, and it wasn't THAT bad of a hangover). Her chronic heartburn doubled in frequency and intensity.

She had read about New York's implementation of a law requiring cigarettes to be "fire-safe", but did not realize it had happened in Texas as well. A friend mentioned it after complaining about his cigarette going out. It immediately clicked. That was the difference. The Texas law went into effect January 1, 2009...these strange sensations had been present since sometime in January.

That led her to research the subject online. Here is what she found:

fsccigarettes.com, a site against the new cigarettes

The posts above and the anti-fsc site are full of anecdotal reports of smokers complaining about health effects and accidentally burning things when the cherries fall off the new smokes (ironic, that). The pro-site quotes statistics on fire safety and analysis of the tar from FSC and non-FSC cigarettes, and claims there is no evidence that these new papers are any more harmful than the traditional ones.

Cally finds that to be of small comfort, given that she felt the difference before she knew that her cigarettes had changed.

She just smoked five homemade cigarettes, made from RYO American Spirit tobacco and non-FSC tubes. She feels great. She's missed a good smoke that didn't make her feel ill. I think she's going to stop buying manufactured cigarettes for a while.

Anyone else have any information or experiences?

Same here, heard that the price of RYO is going to over 20 bucks a pound on the 1st of April. $7 for name brand cigarettes.
They are some nasty smoke, leaves a metal taste.

Re: Fire-safe cigarettes feel different

Yes. They raised the federal ciggie tax 62 cents and the roll-your-own tobacco tax $23.68. That's a 158% increase for cigs and a 2153% increase for RYO. Yes, that's over two thousand percent. The tax will be over 20x higher than it was.

The federal tax on cigarettes is going up from $.39 a pack to $1.0066 per pack. While the increase will surely hurt the cigarette companies, and ultimately, the cigarette consumer, the real victim here is the roll-your-own (RYO) cigarette tobacco industry. RYO cigarette tobacco has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially as the economy has worsened, as it was cheaper to roll your own cigarettes instead of buying a pack of Marlboros. Staying true to the tradition of big businesses not really favoring less regulation and smaller government, the lobbyist for big cigarette companies sought and received the favor of raising the tax on RYO tobacco from $1.10 per pound to $24.78 per pound!

Re: Fire-safe cigarettes feel different

Small comfort to others who might live in the same building.

One of the ironies is that these new smokes might actually be more likely to start fires, if the numerous reports of accidental burnings are part of a trend.

My local tobacco shop owner said today, they are trying to put him out of business. Hard to make a profit and stay in business.

Re: Fire-safe cigarettes feel different

Sure. Why go to the trouble of banning it, with all the political opposition and Constitutional challenges, when one can just raise the taxes to a level that no one but the rich can afford? They used taxation to ban cannabis in the beginning, if I recall correctly.
