MAOI drug interactions - hallucinogens
SWIM is currently on 6mg transdermal (applied and absorbed through the skin) selegiline as prescribed by his psychiatrist. Selegiline at low doses is a selective MAO-B inhibitor, which means that it inhibits the production of substances that break down natural monoamines such as phenethylamine and other trace amines.
MAOIs traditionally have a long list of contraindicated medications (as well as dietary restrictions, though transdermal selegiline does not require them) due to the potentially fatal consequences of hypertension and serotonin syndrome (poisoning from too much serotonin). However, SWIM is interested in hallucinogenic experiences.
SWIM's Questions:
There are a lot of different questions that necessarily arise when one considers MAOIs and their psychedelic use. First, what legally obtainable drugs - not normally psychoactive/psychedelic - would benefit from concurrent use of an MAOI? Second, are there any hallucinogens that are not chemically related to dopamine/tryptamine/phenethylamine/serotonin? Third, is anyone knowledgeable of the extent of the risk in taking serotonergic hallucinogens while on an MAOI? Obviously the dosage would need to be tapered down considerably, if this is even possible. So the final question: any opinions on what, if anything, that lowered dosage should be? Can psychedelic experiences even be obtained without a dangerously high dose?
Drugs currently under consideration:
- dextromethorphan (DXM)
- psilocybin
- mescaline
- LSD or LSA
